Default Herters Black....there’s some potential here

So I had this brainstorm about trying ebonizing instead of painting the bodies of some blacks. I figured since I used sawdust in my restle coating that the ferrous solution should be able to grab enough of the wood and react with the tannic acid to give me the desired results.

I filled a qt jar with white vinegar and cut up the metal staff of some rusty pin flags and dropped them in. Ya gotta leave the lid loose so the off gases can escape. Every day I would tighten the lid, give it a good shake, loosen the lid and set it back on the counter. After a couple of weeks I felt the solution had enough iron in it to give it a go so I hastily restle coated a body last night. This morning I brushed on the solution.

This is what it looks like before applying the solution....

And this is what it looks like 20 minutes after brushing it on....

I took off a mallard hen head I had previously painted and stuck it on just for a better reference....

I would have to say this idea was a success. The ones I do for real will be prepared a lot better than this one was so I expect even better results.

The coloration looks great for a Black Duck. I’d say you nailed it.

That's thinking outside the box, and it looks good too. Now I just need to find some rusty nails...

I had rusty metal laying around. The solution wants iron oxide, it doesn’t care where it gets it from.

Man that looks GREAT! It's nice and flat dark chocolate like a Black!

Does that only work on bare fresh trestle coated blocks? Do you have to neutralize the coloring process?

If you use sawdust it will work. I might run over to happy healthy pet world and get some lizard walnut and see if it works.

I get sawdust from the table saw bag at Lowes for free and then screen it. I'm going to try that ebonizing process.

The problem I'm having with my flat brown camo painted decoys is the mud stains the paint and after a hunt or two they look like poop. I'm tempted to coat them and spray Testors Dull Coat to see if that'll protect them a bit. Do you know any trick to keep mud from staining them?

This is the first time I’ve tried this, just had the idea pop in my head and gave it a try so no experience with how they’ll handle the field.

Question. My Hilliard blacks still make you shit yourself when you glance over at them. 20 years later. Why are we reinventing the wheel over here?
