The news flash is more to the point IE just now discovering the effects of harvesting gobblers during the peak of mating!
    Big difference....
Agreed. I'd even take it a step further and say it's not even discovering, but that they finally have numbers to show the impact.

But we can't be worried about studies and numbers. We've got to give the people what the people want. And the people want harvest numbers.

Didn't the change reduce the lower state season by 5 days? Has the low state traditionally had less birds?

The changes they made several years ago took five days off the front but added them on the back don't know what you're talkin about less Birds

At one point in time, the Lowcountry had the only birds.

I testified at the senate committee hearing on Wednesday and learned a lot about the process.

Legislators are tasked with what is best for the birds in their area while also representing the interests/desires of their constituents.

Both houses are working on a bill currently, so call your legislators and voice your opinion.

I recommended that Mr Lowe forfeit one tag per rhinestone

If you believe what the biologists are saying about peak mating season (or at least how the article portrays it), that should have dramatically reduced harvest in the Lowcountry. I have a hard time giving credence to "biologist" who view our state as an ecological monoculture and recommend once-size-fits-all seasons and limits statewide. I also do not see how their harvest data is anything but a guess.

That said, population definitely seems to be going down, and harvest reduction may well be a good thing.

You'd be amazed at how accurate surveys can be with extrapolating data.

One gobbler can screw 20 hens. Leave bag limits liberal. Avian predator removal needs to be legalized and kill every black/rat snake you can

You heard wrong. 2 birds hasn’t been discussed and your dates are off.

Read the report from DNR that the Legislature tasked them to produce. Studies require man hours and dollars. The study data supports their recommendations, but the study is not without flaws. It is in one area of the state and not on any private hunted land.

Educate yourself and call your legislators. These discussions are happening right now and they will listen if you can have an intelligent conversation without conspiracy theories and finger pointing.

I’d like to know each of your opinions on:
    Dates
    Limits
    Decoys
    Jake’s
    1 per day?
    Cost of tags in state/OOS

    Just curious

    For fun, here is mine:
Game zone 3/4 March 20-May 1 (1 bird per hunter before April)
    Game Zone 2 April 1-May 10
    Game Zone 1 April 5-May 15

    3 bird limit

    1 per day

No Jakes by license carrying adults (exemption for SW annual photo)

No male decoys on public land

No male decoys before April 10

    No Fans

    $10 per tag resident
    $50 per tag non resident
All money raised goes to research

I can get on board with that Boozer. It blows my mind that the tags are free to residents to begin with. They should charge something for them. Maybe there could be better quality research done on a broader scale if the funds were generated.

Pretty much word for word what’d I’d say. I’m not crazy about the one bird before April 1st but I wouldn’t kick and scream about it or be mad if that was the case. I’d be in the woods in March which is all I care about. I don’t have to pull the trigger more than once before then and it would extend my shooting season.

Hunting turkeys in May is lots of fun. Said no one in the Southeast United States ever.
