Default CBD Oil for Dog Seizures

My lab is 8 y/o and started having seizures around 4 y/o. The first few years, the seizures occurred about monthly (less frequent at first), but a few months ago they started occuring every other week and sometimes more frequently.

Four years ago the vet told me we could start some expensive meds, but they may or may not help, and he would suggest no medication since they were not occurring frequently. (possible side effects from the traditional meds that are used.)

According to google, CBD Oil has shown to help dogs with seizures, and is very cheap with minimal side effects. Anybody out there tried it?

AKC has a research project going on on.

IMO (I’m a vet), your dog needs anticonvulsant medications. There are a number of newer generation ones and generic Keppra XR is now rather affordable, especially for big dogs. Drugs in my arsenal for seizures include keppra, phenobarbital, zonisamide and potassium bromide. Additionally I sometimes use gabapentin in some cases.

The more times your dog seizures, the more likely his brain is to learn and repeat.

I’m not opposed to CBD oil, but it sounds like your dog needs a visit with a veterinarian who is current and confident at treating seizures.

Thanks for the advice. I had only heard of "phenobr...." and potassium bromide.

Keppra is new to me. Good results so far?

As people become more and more invested in cannabis sales, expect more and more hype. See a vet.

I've been happy with Keppra. Low side effects. Fast onset.

Most of the dogs we vets treat for seizures are little foo-foo dogs. A seizing lab ain't a bit funny.

    Take Zephyr’s advice.

    No loading period for keppra.

A friend used CBD for a 2 year old black lab, it worked wonders. But sounds like this is a different situation.

I do not the think seizures were an on-going issue.

Went on phenobarbital today. I'm giving him 10ml of CBD oil a day as well. The vet could not give advice on CBD, but did not voice any concerns when I mentioned it.

I'm a believer in Keppra. I have a fixed female that started having cluster seizures and Phenobarb, wasn't working. Keppra was almost instant.

I used CBD oil for a seven-year-old corgi with seizures. It came from CFAH CBD and seem to be a reasonably good brand. It was 350 mg and the dosage was seven drops per day. He's been on it for about six months now and has not had another seizure
