Animal activist blast North Carolina coyote hunting tournament

    ALBEMARLE, N.C. (AP) —

Animal rights activist are blasting a popular coyote tournament in North Carolina, saying the killing is tearing apart coyote families and creating orphans.

The Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Coyote Classic is set to hold its sixth annual hunt in February in Stanley County, with cash prizes for the biggest kill and hunting teams that bring in the most dead coyotes.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Senior Director Stephanie Bell says the stated aim of the tournament is to "protect" the deer population, so that "coyote killers" can have more deer to hunt.

PETA believes the hunt backfires because coyotes from outlying areas will move into the competition-free feeding areas. Bell says the only effective coyote-management plans are based on public outreach and personal responsibility.

That part about creating orphans is so sad. I hope they kill all the babies so this doesn’t happen.

Have you been to the Save the Coyotes page? Their plan is they want less humans and more coyotes........we are doomed. This thread just spurred me to buy a dozen more traps.

I've never seen a squirrel in the road that I didn't try to run over.

I was really hoping that the web site was a joke but.......

    http://www.projectcoyote.org/

Kinda done being surprised about stuff like this anymore...... Seeing that web page reminded me of the people saving the ducks from the savage duck hunters down under!!!!

    https://secure.animalsaustralia.org/...duck-shooting/
“Duck hunting gives a man a chance to see the loneliest places …blinds washed by a rolling surf, blue and gold autumn marshes, …a rice field in the rain, flooded pin-oak forests or any remote river delta. In duck hunting the scene is as important as the shooting.” ~ Erwin Bauer, The Duck Hunter’s Bible, 1965

Three rare black coyotes -- known among hunters as “devil dogs” -- were killed during a large-scale coyote hunting tournament staged outside of Charlotte Feb 8-10.

In all, 149 coyotes were taken in the Carolina Coyote Classic tournament, double the number killed last year, said organizer 704 Outdoors TV.

The animals were bigger, too, with all three top trophies going to coyotes weighing more than 40 pounds, including one that was nearly 42 pounds, according to tournament spokesman John MacPherson.

Black coyotes are highly sought by hunters because they are rare, MacPherson told the Charlotte Observer.

One thing PETA is right about: they can have coyote tournaments every week from now till doomsday and it won't make a dent.

I have hated squirrels with a passion, ever since they felt the need to get in my attic and walls. They are a bushy tailed tree rat. Most people have no clue as to how many homes are destroyed by fire because of them. If you have any squirrels around your house, you need to do everything you can to thin them out.
