    Default Heirloom doubles

I have 2 old sxs shotguns that belonged to my grandfather. In pretty rough shape. Considering having them refinished. Anyone in SC that y'all might recommend for this type work?

    Thanks

A friend of mine ordered a "matched pair" from England years ago. They ran $110,000 each. He had to fly over and get measured, etc.

When they arrived, they were not matched as one had ducks and the other quail engraved. They were so embarrassed that they sent him another one with ducks, for the low, low price of only $50,000. I have only ever seen him shoot a beat ass old 870...

Just for a point of reference...these guys restore firearms the right way:

    https://www.turnbullrestoration.com/

See what they charge to restore yours and compare the pricing you get locally. You get what you pay for.

Ron Cox but you’re going to wait a while.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I have had Ron Cox and Darlington both work on guns for me.

I’m not sure about the restoration part , but out own SnakeJenkins from this site is a great gunsmith and certified appraiser. He has also done work for me in the past.

He'll offer you nothing for a gun (Winchester 1897) that one of his "cronies" couldn't repair after having me search/buy parts and keeping the gun for six months. I sold the parts off the gun for more than ten times his offer.

    I wouldn't trust them with a Highpoint (if I owned one, which I don't)

Good on you for wanting to put your grandfathers guns back in good condition. You might do a little research on the guns before jumping too deep into sxs restorations, as a quality restoration can cost several thousand $ if it includes new case colors, new wood and rust bluing the barrels. If this are a high grade small bore Remington and Smith guns it might justify the cost, but if they are field grade 12 ga, it likely means spending much more than they are worth. Might just consider having a good smith inspect the guns and clean, and get some low pressure shells from RST and polywad and enjoy them for what they are. Another good gunsmith option that does high quality work and is very fair is Bill Schwartz on Brushy Top Rd in Ellijay, GA.

I would be cautious of any rework on an old gun outside of tightening up the action, if that's even possible.

I've got a Remington double and it is going on a rack over the fireplace. Its so loose I won't dare shoot it.

Ever considered doing any of the work yourself? Midway USA puts out a lot of very informative youtube videos on gunsmithing.
