Default 2014 Ford Explorer 3.5 ecoboost

    Explorer with 89k miles

    Complaint: adding coolant occasionally.

Pressure tested system, no leaks found. Checked the oil and the crankcase was full of coolant.

    Culprit: water pump

Calls for 9.5 hours to R&R and factory pump is around $200.00 with all the seals and gaskets. Pump is internal behind timing cover and chain driven. This vehicle had no chain rattle symptoms.

    Access

    New pump installed

Crap. My truck is low in coolant occasionally.

Is this a common issue with the ecoboost?

Gotta love a chain driven water pump. It’s a worse idea than a timing belt. I hope the coolant didn’t ruin any bearings.

Didn't they change something in '15 that makes these problems less common or is it still the same?

Is there any new vehicle that will make 200k without major surgery? My dad has a 2004 f150 with 4.6 that has 340k on it and only had a battery and alternator.

Indeed, they put a secondary gasket on it...literally! Problem is, see the cardboard trap in first pic. We put that in there to catch falling debris. That is in the oil pan. If the pump leaks externally, the coolant will drip right into the pan.

All the issues with vehicles these days we should go back to horses. But then Glenn would have his own forum. And q know how that would turn out.

Btw I need things done to mine

Same thing happened to my 14 f150 3.5 out of state. Got it fixed and drove it to the Toyota dealership and swapped it out for a tubdra

Very poor design. My son had this happen with a 2005(?) Taurus 3.5 about 9 months ago. He was afraid it may have washed the bearings, but the Ford dealer checked them and just replaced the water pump. There is a weep hole where it is supposed to leak out externally when the pump goes, but that didn't work so well. They supposedly updated newer 3.5's with a "heavy duty" bearing in the pump, but I don't think I'd trust that so much, either. He also has a 16 Flex, 3.5 and I have a 14 Explorer, 3.5. Ugh!

Toyota did the same back in the late 80s early 90s with the chain driven water pump 22r/re).. Didnt fail with the mileage of these 3.5s but basically the same design resulting in water in oil (sometimes mistaken for head gasket).
