Hen decoys attract gobblers = morally sound
Jake decoys attract gobblers = ruining our turkey population

But what if the jake decoy self identifies as a hen decoy?

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion.

I tell you what, you put a hen decoy in a field that has a gobbler with 25 hens and see what happens. Now put a full strut decoy in the same field and see what happens. I can about guarantee you are more likely to kill said gobbler with the full strut decoy. I do not think it is coincidental that our turkey population began to fall about the same time full strut decoys, and fanning became popular which was around the early to mid 2000s when B Mobile and other such decoys came out. The birds that everyone said were unkillable now became vulnerable. I'm not saying male decoys are the only factor for sure, but they dang sure aren't helping. That's my 2 cents and I'm no expert

I remember a time, when you needed to get a bird inside of 40 yards to kill, 30 being optimal. I've had many field birds hang up at 60 yards, and strut around in a circle, until they lost interest. How many people can now kill that bird, even if he hangs up at 70 or 80 yards?

In case it matters, I don't even use a deke 95% of the time. Never tried fanning or strutter but have used a jake successfully for a few sets with little boys and old men. I just assume fanning and strutter effectiveness will taper off at some point and the fad will fade. The only crutch I use is a hunting pattern and holding for around 30 yards. A little scatter works better for yanked triggers. I really need to invent a choke that throws an horizontal oval pattern about 10" tall and 3' wide.
