Well, I’m 0/2 at the culvert. The trap was sprung and buried.

My wife is really getting into the challenge of trapping. She has been going with me the last few days and made me stop at the store to buy another couple of 330’s. I’m also ordering some snares tonight.

I moved the set to a slide between some canals and a small dam. The slide is used when it travels over the road to repair the little dam. I put it half submerged on the down slope of the slide. I didn’t use any funneling sticks and got it as close to the bottom of the slide as I could and still keep it half submerged.

I appreciate all the suggestions so far and want to say thanks for humoring me in this learning process.

Patience is the key in trapping . Keep at it and you’ll get them.

It looks like you have a brand new shiny trap. You don’t have to do anything fancy, but I like to spray paint mine with flat black and brown. A day or two to dry and take off. If you don’t want to do that I would rub some of the mud all over trap at the set. You will learn your own methods as you go along, be sure to post a pic when you nail your first one!!!

    I’m 1/3!

I brought my wife and son out with me this am. I planned to shoot wood ducks first thing and check the trap after. My wife was really jazzed about checking the trap so she went off on her own while my son and I waited for the ducks to start flying. About the same time the ducks stopped she came back with one slung over her shoulder.

There was at least 1 tail-slapping when we stopped to shoot ducks. I’m going to get the rest of the stuff set and start working on the rest after duck season.

Get some deep water racks/stabilizers for the 330’s. Do some walking and find out where they’re living. Either in a lodge or under the road or spoilbank. They usually have two or three access points. Put the 330’s at the bottom of the racks and stick them flush with the bottom at access points as close to the lodge as you can and make sure they are sturdy. You can identify them because the bottom will be hard where they are sliding in and out. Same for the ditch. If you can find a log that has already been in place for a while you should be able to find where they are diving under it. Like crossings, they dive in the same place every time and will have their own channel on the bottom. There’s a 1000 different scenarios, but catching them where they live is a quick way to knock out a few.

Watch both of these videos if you haven’t already. Lots of good info in them, second one has more conibear sets in it.

Also did one of the springs on the 330 not open? I see only one open in the pics. Did the safety fall down and keep the spring from opening? If so you can add a little bit of thin wire to the spring coil and then once you set the trap you slide the safety up and wrap the thin wire around it to hold it up and out of the way.

    Thanks for the videos.

One spring didn’t fire. I set the trap upside down so the trigger hinge was at the bottom. After setting everything up the water had dropped a little and I needed to move the trap deeper to keep it legal. I’m guessing I didn’t take one safety off after repositioning. I thought I had removed them both. I’m not happy with the type of safety so adding the wire will be a good thing.

I primed and painted the traps today. They should be good and dry by Tuesday. I may go and make a few sets this week.
