    Default Holding your first Canvasback

Fowler and I headed to Alabama this weekend to pick up a King Eider from Shane’s, and get in a hunt with a buddy of mine. Had a good quick trip. Fowler toughed it out, and we sat in the cold and rain for two and a half hours, before he got cold and was ready to go. My buddy shot a nice hen Canvasback. It was a good time. Never seen someone so happy to get up at 4:30am, as my son.

I remember my first Can- Congrats on a great hunt and remember- kids that small have a hard time communicating just how cold they might be. Mine went with me at that age, and I almost lost one when he was 10 due to hypothermia. No duck is worth that.

He’s two, so I watch him real close, and the moment he is uncomfortable I pack up a hunt, no matter how good it might be. This was his 2nd OOS Hunt. He was eating raisins, and insisted on taking his gloves off. I knew he’d get cold hands, and he did. The rain had slacked off, and was a heavy mist. Birds were very slow. He got pretty upset pretty quick about his cold hands, and let me know it. I threw my gear in my buddy’s boat, and was able to walk from where we were hunting back to the car where I put the heat on, sat him in my lap, and helped warm his hands up. Ten minutes later he was good, and talking about much fun he had.

I totally agree no duck is worth your child’s life. I’d rather leave a good hunt early due to one of my boys being cold, uncomfortable, etc, and keep them interested in hunting for life, than freak them out and turn them off for life from hunting.

That's awesome. I'm 27 and shot my first can last week. I cant wait for my little one to get in the woods with me.

“… duckhunting stands alone as an outdoor discipline. It has a tang and spirit shared by no other sport—a philosophy compounded of sleet, the winnow of unseen wings, and the reeks of marsh mud and wet wool. No other sport has so many theories, legends, casehardened disciples and treasured memories.”

They grow up fast man! But I would rather hunt with my boys than my buddies!
