Default Baits and Lures for Coyotes

What are some of your favorite baits and lures for coyotes? Have you seen a big difference between the ones you’ve tried or does it really matter?

    I’ve tried the following

    Ogormans Powder River Paste

    Cavens Hiwatha Valley Predator Bait

    Clint Locklears Gator Bait

Raw Dawgs All in Predator bait

And I just ordered some RK’s Predator plus to try

    Lures

    GH2

    VooDoo

    Violator 7

    Minnesota Red

    Fox 21

Voodoo has been my number one but hawbakers coyote 500 is close. I havent caught much on gh II. Violator 7 is pretty good also.

Power river paste is my best bait. Although I have slowed down on using bait at every hole and just using lure due to all the possum catches.

Cavens Hiwatha Valley bait and VooDoo have worked best on dogs for me. I try making some myself every year, but the two listed above are as good as you can make or buy.

Could suspend the carcass a couple feet and place a trap or two buried under it maybe. I know DNR would suspend chicken parts when they were trying to catch the red wolves and had the foot holds buried and chained to cinder blocks (not buried). This encourages the wolf to focus up and not on the trap and then they are trying to hop/jump to grab bait and inadvertently end up in trap. They caught my dog one evening while when we went for a walk on golf course and failed to post any signs or let any residents know bc they didnt want people to know wolves were on IOP. It was a very interesting exchange of words between my dad and the officer that responded. They paid for all the dental work on my dog as he needed numerous extractions from fracturing teeth on trap. Took them 2 years before they came back and asked for their traps. I said sure let me go get my dad and the guy left.

I have had coyotes on my camera behind house in MT P taking duck carcasses and I would guess maybe you could put it in a bucket or something on its side (similar to a coni bear set) and set a trap at the mouth of bucket if you dont try suspending them? Also had bobcats come and take them.

The coyotes seem to like chicken noodle soup out the can too. They will come over and pick the can up (lid partially open) and walk away with it. I haven’t messed with them in awhile as I wasn’t trying to really encourage them in the yard but was more confirming their presence. If I could get away with whacking them I would.

I’m interested as well. Trying this year for the first time. So far no dice. Seems to be a pretty steep learning curve. If any of you fellas are upstate, I would love to tag along and learn first hand. There’s a big gap from real life and YouTube, learning that real quick like.

Tried a lot of 'em...About all of the most popular ones, and some of the wall brands.

I now make my own bait that's based on deer meat, but contains other "secret" ingredients...I always thought the loud "skunky" smelling baits were too strong for our climate that is not as cold where most of those baits were developed...My thoughts are that as keen as a coyote's nose is, it doesn't need to be that strong...A milder smell will cause a predator to approach the dirt hole closer to investigate more...The closer the predator comes, the more it works the set, the better the odds of a catch.

Fact......Most people don't realize how far a coyote can smell a bait or lure...I take my lab with me on the trapline...She alerts me on many set locations...Whether it be a scent post type marked area or a recently used trail that warrants a set...By watching her, I've seen her wind old dirt hole sets that the traps we're pulled from a month before from 30'-50' away.

DNR offers a trapper education course, I took it a few years back and was pretty impressed with it. Very hands on and several old timers there to help show you stuff.
