    Default Iowa 1st Gun

Weather has been shit. Heavy rain, which has made everything but hardtop impassable. This dirt gets greasy as hell if you piss on it, hard to stand up slick. Couldn’t hunt half our lease, due to creek being out of it banks and not wanting to trash roads. I’ve seen a ton of deer including one absolute beast, on the other side of the creek. Had to pass him up since I had no way to recover him. I was watching a bunch of turkeys, when this fella pushed a doe through timber. I didn’t have time to glass him but I saw decent time length and a BIG body. Made a quick shot with my 45-70 and he piled up just across a little mound out of sight. He’s not what I came to Iowa for, but considering the conditions, I’ll take him. I field dressed him to make drag easier, but I’ll guesstimate he was 225-250 on the hoof. Everything froze hard last night and as soon as road clears I’m heading home. On a positive note, I saw more pheasants than I’ve seen in 10 years on hunting out here.

Safe travels. My cousin out there hunted over the weekend. Said it was miserable.

I thought you had to shoot a shotgun or muzzle loader in Iowa.

Sometimes it’s more the chase than the prize..

I'd swim naked in 20 degrees to go get a big buck

Never seen so many Marlin leverguns in one place. Everyone is shooting a 45-70 or 444.

This is west side of property looking from top terrace. A good sized creek divides the lease. The east was inaccessible Sarturday and Sunday. A hard freeze tonight will firm up roads enough to get in there.

Pretty place. I’ve never messed with a 45-70 at all. What’s the range on one that you would feel confident in shooting a deer. I’ve got a slug gun that’s a tack driver and might go back next year. I may have to look into the 45-70.

Beyond 200 the holdovers get pretty big. I shoot a fixed 4X on mine at at 200 I hold hairline and it’s in the vitals. That’s for an 18” guide gun 300 grain bullet at 1850 FPS.

If I was starting over, I'd get a .444 Marlin. Shoots flatter and hits almost as hard as the +P 45-70 loads.
