    Default Grill Airflow

Ive got a grill with a smoke box and cant get it to draft properly. The box itself has a fairly small vent so Im wondering if its just not getting enough air because as soon as I close the door it chokes it out. The vent from the box to the grill is about 4 in in diameter and I have both opened on top of the grill. Any thoughts?

Is there a vent on the firebox?

The pipe going to the grill is to small. The smoke is actually choking it out.

Wouldn’t it burn with air getting to it instead of actually smoking? Seems like for a smoker you would want it to sit there and smolder more so than burn. But I have no idea.

Not enough air. Needs to have a adjustable air intake some kind of way

Did you check the pipe from the box to the grill for buildup that would impede the airflow?

That 4” pipe seems mighty small to me. Do you have some heat in the main cooker?

4” to the smoker is plenty. Intake air at the firebox is your issue

Agree...firr/smoke needs an intake to be able to exhaust

Got some smoke and tenderness is right on. It will hold 250 for as long as the propane lasts.

If the intake to the grill isn’t large enough, then you will be doubling possibly tripling the intake to the fire box causing it to burn really hot and really fast and not pushing the heat into the grill. The grill intake has to be proportionate to the size of the firebox.

He said when he closes the door it goes out. Sounds like not enough combustion air to me.

Re read my previous post. If the intake to the grill isn’t large enough, it will choke out the fire. The smoke has to go somewhere to go and it has to go quickly. This link should help. Imagine throwing a blanket on top of a fire and then removing it really fast. You start to smother it, as soon as you remove it, it gains oxygen and ignites. The smoke acts as a blanket when the door is shut.

I elected not to use dampers on my door. I control my airflow and fire by the firebox door only. My chimney stays wide open the entire cook. I have a 24x24x24 fire box hanging on a 268 gallon pit with a 3 ft chimney that is 6in in diameter

what are you doing with your chimney pipe when messing with the firebox vent?
You need to get the two working together, the draft between them is the key
