Default Arkansas deer season closed for flooding

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has closed deer season on some wildlife management areas and private land in eastern Arkansas because of high water.

The commission says high water on the White and Cache rivers led to the closing of the seasons because the low-lying areas can quickly become inundated, forcing deer into smaller areas with less cover.

The commission says the deer could then become vulnerable to overharvest, and fatally wounded deer could run into swift-moving streams before hunters could recover the animal.

Only deer hunting is closed, seasons and limits for other game animals remain unchanged.

A description of all flood-prone regions and criteria for closures are available in the Arkansas Hunting Guidebook and at https://www.agfc.com/en/hunting/big-game/deer/fpz .
