Plug the compression relief holes or shave the head to raise compression. Either way requires going into the motor. Not much more you can do with them. Finding a 3 cylinder 25/30 will open way more doors than that 2 cyl has. Also modifications when done right will not affect reliability

I shaved the head and put chris Carson reeds in mine. Additionally I'd say make sure you have a good prop. Too much prop will bog those things down.

Technically, too much prop will bog any motor down.
What's stock compression on those 2 cyl motors?
