Default Hunting accident in York County

    York —

A man was shot in the back by his brother in York County Sunday in what South Carolina wildlife officials called an accident.

The victim, 53, was shot with a deer hunting rifle by his brother, 49.

It happened around 3:45 p.m. at a private land hunt club, off Simpson Road near McConnells, said First Sgt. Jason Plemmons of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

No charges will be filed because the shooting was a “freak accident,” Plemmions said.

“The round went through the door of the truck first, and the door probably saved his life,” Plemmons said. “The bullet fragmented after it went through the door.”

The brother who fired the shot was taking the rifle out of a gun case as two prepared to go hunting when he shut the bolt on the rifle and it went off, Plemmons said.

The bullet went through the door of the truck first and then hit the victim in the back, Plemmons said.

The victim was airlifted to a Charlotte hospital, but was later discharged and is expected to make a full recovery, Plemmons said.

The accidental shooting of a hunter by another hunter is the second in York County since hunting season opened last month.

A 15-year-old boy shot a 49-year-old man in September on the first day of dove season, police said.

Barrel pointed in an unsafe direction. What made it go off is irrelevant.

Don't load your gun until you get in the stand, treat every gun as if it were loaded.

Muzzle awareness! Crazy how often I see inexperienced hunters waving barrels around while getting in/out of vehicles, pulling firearms from cases, as well as just when walking around before or after hunts.
I tell ppl that come hunt w me that if they don’t point theirs at me I promise to return the favor!!! If they do point it at me, they will know very quickly. I told a cousin once when he was carelessly getting in my car w a rifle that if he pointed his at me again I was going to draw down on him just to see if he liked the way it made him feel. Needless to say, he started paying attention.

One thing I liked about the Ruger m77 I had compared to the Tikka that I now own is the Ruger had a 3rd position on the safety that locked the firing pin but I could still open the breach while the gun was safe. Doesn't excuse pointing the firearm in an unsafe direction, but it was better than nothing.

Yep. I had a shotgun slamfire in the timber in arkansas once. Luckily the barrel was pointed up. Scared the shit out of me though.

Agreed. I get annoyed when they use terms like "freak accident"

Hate it for the men involved, but it could have been avoided.

I believe Vanguard but could be wrong. My dad has one in 7mm Mag. Fired when you shut the bolt. Shipped it to Weatherby and they fixed it.
