    Default Early Birthday Hunt

Today my oldest daughter turned 5. We had her birthday party yesterday and afterwards she was playing with some presents in the living room and stopped to ask if we could go hunting that afternoon. I had already planned on going by myself but quickly changed plans to include her. This is the first season she has sat in the stand with me and it has been fun introducing her to the outdoors. I have a tower stand on a 3 acre food plot setup just for family hunting. This stand usually has a decent amount of afternoon deer activity to keep things interesting and keep her “in the hunt”.

We got settled in the stand about a hour and a half before dark and the hunt began. We were watching birds feeding in what was left of the standing corn when a big doe stepped out of the woods onto the road. She eased across and into the standing corn. I asked my daughter if we were going to shoot one today and she said “Well isn’t that why we were out here Daddy?” with a serious look. It made me laugh out loud. I said ok but its still early so lets see what else comes out. A few minutes later the doe’s two yearlings came out and started feeding with her. We watched them for about 30 mins when I saw a buck coming out of the woods on the other end of the field. He came out with his head down and ran the length of the field to get to the doe and her yearlings. He chased them around the field and in and out of the woods for the next 10 minutes putting on quite a show for us. We were whispering about the excitement and my daughter whispered back to me that she wanted me to shoot the buck. After making sure that is really what she wanted i put her ear muffs on and got ready. The deer were back in the woods again and I let her know when they run back out I will shoot him when he stops. A minute or two later he stepped to the edge of the woods and I dropped him at about 75 yards. She was so excited and I was as well. We got our stuff together and got down to go look at him. When we approached him we took a second to thank God for the opportunity he gave us to take this deer and for keeping us safe.

He definitely is not the biggest buck I’ve taken but without a doubt will be one of the most memorable! I look forward to spending much more time in the outdoors with my girls!

Great story ending with a nice solid buck- you need to frame that picture and put it on the plaque with the mount

    Doesn’t get better than that.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.
