I was being an asshole and that really not fair because I don’t know you. My apologies. You could be the second coming of Jackie bushman for all I know. My point is long range hunting is a little different than long range shooting. Master the shooting part first.

Not to beat a dead horse but it is only right to practice shooting at 300 yards before attempting to kill a deer at that range.

I shoot 270 with 130 reloads and have my rifle sighted in at 235 yards.
This gives me 3" drop at 300 yards with my particular reload/gun.

I have another rifle that I take if shots are going to be further than 300 yards. I have it set up to hit a pie plate at 525 yards.

This is also reloads and I had to sent alot of ammo down range to get accurate enough to take a shot. 393 yards has been my fartherest shot I have taken.

Not tooting a horn here just trying to explain Why.

Shooting 270 yesterday, Swarovski scope. Shooting handloads (130 gr NBT) . In fact I shoot handloads out of every rifle I use except my Ruger No 1 45/70 (handloaded for it for years but found Hornady LeverReverloutions shoot great out of it).

What you are saying makes lot of sense, maybe I need to sight one of these in for 300 yards for this stand .

Most time when I hunt this stand shooting 7 mag or 300 Wby Mag, both wit Vari XIII’s on them . Dropped more than 1 deer at 300 plus with 7 mag

It’s happened to all of us. Load up sum boowetts and give me a shout. The more you shoot at distance the better you get at it. You build confidence and learn better fundamentals.

Or do like I had to do on my dad's rifle.
Sight it in to accommodate the jerk.

He won't take a shot at a deer over 100 yards but would jerk trigger every time 1-1/2 to right. I adjusted scope to shoot 1.5 to left and he could cover 5 shots up with quarter dead on.

I just gotta remember to compensate for this should I ever take his rifle hunting.

I wouldn't do that if it were me, I'd just know for sure what my drop is at said distance.

Just trying to think it out.

Does you rangefinder have the built in inclinometer? Sig calls theirs AMR, Angle Modified Range. https://www.sigsauer.com/products/el...ders/kilo2000/ Leupold has the TBR, True Ballistic Range. https://www.leupold.com/rangefinders...er-rangefinder

Even if your range finder does not have this feature, I'm guessing the difference in angle will only be +/- 10 yards max. Poked it into my Strelok and 280 yards is 4.4" and 300 yards is 6.1" drop with a 200yard zero. That's less that 2" difference.

You shouldn't be trying to remember the taxidermist's phone number while you are calculating your trajectory.

If you’re 2.5” high at 100, shooting a 130gr bullet @2950 that would put you dead on at 255 and 3” low at 300

Try this. Take your gun and a friend to the range. Have friend load your gun. Have some rounds loaded and some empty. You shoot and have friend watch your reaction to the shot. I will almost bet when you pull the trigger on an empty round you will flinch, most likely dropping the barrel and looking over the scope. On long shots this will result in either a miss or a very low hit. I know you shoot several different guns and the Mags. really are loud and kick. To each his own but I am a one rifle guy. When the time comes to shoot little things will make all the difference. When I'm about to shoot I always tell myself two things: keeping looking through the scope after the shot and bolt the gun quick. You may not get "buck fever" every time you see one, but sooner or later you will. Best advise, take Tha Dick up on his offer.

People always tend to focus on elevation and the changes that happen there. No one ever thinks about that 1/2" of windage being off to one side or the other at 100 yards and what that looks like at 300+ yards.

One more thing. When you go to the range Don't put your rifle in a shooting vise. Maybe just one sand bag on forearm and not a bag under the rear of your stock. Play fair. For long range shooting at deer I also use shooting stick under the rear of stock. This way your forearm is on shooting rail and back of stock is supported by shooting stick. Almost rock steady.
