    Default I got some access!

Big group of ranches out here and I saw some sandhill cranes on their property. Figured I’d ask. 100$ and I have unlimited access to all ranch land for any bird hunting I want to do. I’m sitting here watching the sunrise where a group of cranes has been each am...hoping they return. There is a 100yardx40yard 1.5’ deep pond on my way in here that’s covered up with ducks. Watched redheads and mallards land in there at sunset yesterday to join the pile of teal, mallards, and at least one sprig that were already there. Hoping I kill a crane this am and give them a chance to bug out to eat so I can set up my layout blind for some afternoon killing. Shot 7 doves in 30 minutes between here and there yesterday afternoon before getting called in to the hospital to place an IV. All of this is taking place with the snow capped Laramie Mtns as my backdrop. I’m starting to like this place! Hopefully I can follow this up with a true field report and some pics. Till then...good morning!

Holy shit! I’m watching hundreds of ducks in several groups circling this corn field and that pond!

I’ll post some pics after I recover from nearly dying in a three foot deep pond from hypothermia this afternoon. Got in a hurry and headed out in appropriate clothes for 53 degrees and sun and endured about an hour and a half of sideways blowing snow that rolled in in a hurry. As I was crossing the pond after a futile search for a cripple, I realized I was 60 yards from dry land, shaking uncontrollably, and not thinking straight. Be careful out there...shit snuck up on me quick. Short story is 8 greenheads, 1 hen mallard, one hen GWT, one hen BWT, one hen shoveler...and one horrible whiff on a redhead. I couldn’t set up where I wanted to yesterday without sticking out horribly, but I managed to shoot a few that would get up and leave over me or late-abort the first approach and pull up for another pass or swim over to the decoys where I could sit up and shoot them as they jumped. Despite the success I had, it’s a pretty sad strap considering the number and variety of ducks that poured into that little hole. Legal was 1823. At 1500, pairs to groups of 5-8 started arriving pretty steady...maybe 10-15 minute lulls. At ~1630, bigger groups started pouring in every 5 minutes or so. From 1730 till I unloaded at 1823, it was one group after another in a continuous stream...reminded me of an airport. 98% of everything coming in there other than teal wound up taking the same final approach +\- 20 yards left or right and would land in the middle and clear the runway for the next group. That approach slot was ~ 20 yards beyond my abilities, but it was a hell of a show. I just sat there and watched the show till nearly dark, and when I was picking up my decoys, they kept coming and did not care...they’d fly away from me...maybe circle a couple of times, but they not leave the pond. I have two more days I can hunt this first split, and I hope I can catch that spectacle on video tomorrow or Monday.
