I use a ruger mini 30 as my woods rifle- the 7.62 x 39 is a deadly deer/hog round out to 175 yds with minimal recoil- I killed a 190 lb boar with it yesterday. Many smallish kids have shot it with no complaints

Question to some of the responders.... Wouldn't two cartridges with approximately the same case capacity shooting about the same weight bullet at similar speeds out of similar weight guns have about how the same recoil? Is there some magic in a 140 gr 6.5 Creedmoor or 260, that makes it recoil less that a 7-08 shooting a 140 grain bullet?

Don’t you know that a smaller diameter 140gr would be less recoil than a larger diameter 140gr??

Must be why a 25-06 recoils less, even though it uses about 10 grains more powder???

I'll second the .257 Roberts. Less recoil and quieter than most other calibers and you can shoot up to 122 grain bullet. Perfect youth gun IMO. Not just youth though....I shoot one, too.

So like I said, similar bullet weight, similar powder charge, similar rifle weight equals similar recoil.

You could try having her practice with a .22, then, once she’s in the stand, give her the 7mm-08. I’ve never noticed the volume of a report or the recoil of any gun when I’m shooting at something with a pulse. Patterning a shotgun with turkey loads and shooting at a gobbler, are two very different experiences.
