SPARTANBURG, S.C. —
Until Wednesday, just one person was permitted to hunt waterfowl on Lake Bowen in Spartanburg County.

Walter Montgomery’s permit is no longer valid.

“Certain lake residents have expressed concern about waterfowl hunting on Lake Bowen, and after careful deliberation, Spartanburg Water System has decided to prohibit hunting on the lake and is therefore rescinding the access permit issued to you for hunting and managing waterfowl on our reservoir property,” Spartanburg Water CEO Sue Schneider wrote in a letter to Montgomery.

Montgomery is the father of John Montgomery, the chairman of the Spartanburg’s public works commission that oversees Spartanburg Water.

John Montgomery told WYFF News 4 Investigates the family never used the permit to hunt waterfowl on the lake.

A policy Schneider signed to be effective Wednesday says there is a public waterfowl hunting area on Lake Blalock, but “no other waterfowl hunting is permitted on Spartanburg Water System property.”
