    Default Teal

I know hurricane is hitting the coast and we are worried about the idiots that see a storm coming and don't leave, but let's get serious for a second.

What are the chances this storm will push teal inland? I was going to Beaufort this weekend but that plan has shit the bed.

Perhaps, but my bet is that the teal currently on the coast will go the way of the hummingbirds and head South. With all the standing water we will have afterwards, you could see incoming teal just about anywhere...

I'm in Aiken county and we never get enough teal to shoot. We normally see a few but I'm gonna check everything out Friday and see if we have a few groups hanging around.

Inland? I’d imagine they’ll feed hard today and tomorrow then catch that north wind down to the glades.

Also, I’m not sure you grasp how big this storm is
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

To put it in perspective, Storm Team 2 says it is as wide as the distance between Charleston and the Mississippi River...

That's pretty big. We will see. Two days ago we weren't even expecting to get any rain from it. I wish I could get my job wrong 50 percent of the time and still be employed.

Personally my biggest worry is over the newly repaired water control structures in our CAT 1s. I could easily wand off the teal entirely if I could to save the repairs and work completed.

Strick, you think you'll have an update soon on those aforementioned dikes?

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!

Saw quite a few of them today. A lot of them have been topped. Interior dikes have been set where large breaches existed previously. The topping material looks pretty bad ( hopefully it will pack but lots of woody detritus showing in depths from top to bottom) but understandably so from the fact that the good stuff is long gone and the long reach can only get out so far.

The fields inside look terrible though, Phrag galore and giant chord grass everywhere. Most of the water was very high in the fields and the trunks had not been set to drain the rainfall yet. One step at a time and am super happy that the Delta repairs were spared.

Have not gotten an update on Samworth conditions after repair but should know something soon on those. BI a non issue at present.

If you’re talking about Delta Cat 1s, there is no good gumbo left for dike topping. It’s all mostly clay sand with organic matter. Can pile it as high as you want, it eventually slides off. It’s about doing the best before possible with what’s available. Water still high in the fields to stop over wash erosion. Hopefully it will drain when the Santee starts coming back down.

    TM,

I reckon they are eventually going to have to expand by going further across the ditch for the good stuff or truck another better material in. They could have dropped some water yesterday easily while I was there, whats the peak forecast flood for the delta? I haven't seen it yet.

It’s not too bad, lucked like we got some semblance of an outgoing tide today. Was supposed to crest at 11.1ft at Jamestown today. We will see that water in a day or two, but’s it’s not much to worry about.
It’s keeping water piled up in the more inland fields though.
