    Default Outdoor Wireless Bridge/Access Point

I wanna say that I'm feeling quite accomplished today.

Finally got my outdoor wifi access points correctly networked. I've had these in the boxes for over 3 years because I had been intimidated. However, I started this venture Sunday. 4 days later, back and forth with tech support via email, and I FINALLY have them working like they should. The cool thing is they can span miles if needed. Luckily -- they just have to go about 100 yards. I'm stoked about the added options I'll now have down at my barn -- IP cameras, Roku, Chromecast, Android box, etc.

I have Nest wifi cameras at the house, and a 4 camera CCTV system down at the barn; they are on a 1TB drive with continuous read/write. The system is network capable, but I've just had it holding about 1 week's worth at a time.

Now, I can have one bridge/AP down at the barn, plug a LAN cable into it, run it to a router, then run a LAN out of the router into the CCTV hub. Then, I'll be able to watch my CCTV via phone/web. I can also add 4 more cameras if I want. Hell, I can even plug in another omni-directional antenna and really boost the sign

Anyway -- if anyone is after such a setup, holler, and I'll do the best I can to help.

This is basically what you'd need; 2 of these: https://www.engeniustech.com/engeniu...int-ens202ext/ . Mine are the ENS202 models; these new models are upgraded with external antennae, whereas mine are internal.

Haha. Not the first time I’ve heard that. Though wonder if its dyslexia or some latent feelings playing hell with you...

So I’m not a tech nerd and don’t understand this. How is this different from a WIFI extender?

An extender just stretches your signal a little further.

A network bridge actually bridges the gap between 2 locations.

I could have one mounted on the side of a building on 1 city block, and go a few miles down the road, mount on another building, point it back to the 1st building, and I would now have internet at that building. The wifi at the 2nd building wouldn't be that strong, but there, I would plug in a router to my bridge, and have full internet capabilities.

You know areas or business that have free public wifi and there are those big-ass boxes mounted on poles or ceilings? Kind of the same principle, but on a smaller scale.

WiFi extender is going to slow down your available network speed because the extender has to receive and transmit the data over the existing WiFi network.
Using an acess point you are basically allowing a lot more devices to connect to the network without slowing down the network speed.

lets look at it this way. we need 10000 cars to get from Columbia to Aiken ASAP
the speed of the WiFi extender would be like having all 10000 cars go down hwy 1
the speed of the acess point would be like putting all the cars on I-20

I won't claim to be a network specialist but I'm pretty sure if you add a 2nd router at the barn it will try to issue IP address's which will conflict with the router at the house, unless configured correctly (some routers can't be configured this way) You should be able to add a network switch to create a hardwired network at the barn that communicates back to house thru access point if access point has that capability.

    Hmm...

    Ok. Thanks for advice.

I may check with EnGenius before I buy the router.

First, I will check my signal strength by the barn. If the signal is good, then I'll simply run with that.

I wonder if I can plug my CCTV box directly into the bridge?

If the cctv is an ip system then yes you can plug it in the bridge.

    Who's your current tv provider?

Bottom line, what do I need to do to get internet from my house to my barn so that I can use my phone or tablet or maybe stream a movie on occasion. I have DirectTV for football, but if I could ditch that and stream games I would.

I'm not opposed to paying someone for their time to come do it.
