Anyone in or around that area ever seen one? Buddy and I were bushhogging the other day he said he saw what looked to be a rattlesnake while cutting lanes in a cutover. He said it looked like it was as thick as a baseball bat

My FIL is just shy of 95 years old and has made no mention of them and he likes to tell a story.
I would believe him visor!
One of my agents was bitten twice by a timber rattler near the Fairfield Chester line.

Not near Chester
I caught him out the corner of my eye and tried to clip his head so I could fry him up.. and yeah, I'm one that doesn't typically kill snakes. Except cottonmouths in my parameter.. but I've done ruint the meat on this one.

Y'all be aware that I am the one who needs to know about any rattlesnakes in the Upstate outside the mountains. My study group would be extremely interested in knowing their whereabouts.
Yes, there are some in Chester Co.

Will do!
What! Rattlesnakes in Chester? No way!!!
Heard it was a panter
Right, I work with the EDB Task Force but I am personally interested in connecting the dots outside of the midlands, mountains and low country. Why are there none or so few in the Piedmont counties? There has never been one documented in Laurens County. Southern Spartanburg Co has a recent voucher. I know of a couple of vouchers in Greenwood. None that I know of in Union. I hear from a former state herpetologist that there have been a handful (probably less than 5) in southern Greenville and Anderson Counties.
Why?

I sent a grown one to hell last night. Not in Chester though.
It was a little before he started working with us. I believe the snake was under the lawnmower in the shed. When he went to move the mower it bit him. I remember him saying the bite had a lot of force behind it.... Like getting hit with a bat. So much force that it knocked him off his feet and he fell towards the snake. The led to the second bite. He said the second bite had less venom. It was a long recovery and he still has some nerve damage. I think the other thing that stood out was the hospital bill. If you think UTV insurance is a scam, don't ever get yourself in a position to need antivenom!
