Millennial Couple Bikes Through ISIS Territory to Prove ‘Humans Are Kind’ and Gets Killed

    Michael Sinkewicz

    15 AUG 2018

"Evil is a make-believe concept we've invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans."

An idealistic young American couple was killed in an Islamic State-claimed terrorist attack last month while on a cycling trip around the world.

Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan, who were both in their late 20s, last year quit their office jobs in Washington, DC, to embark on the journey. Austin, a vegan who worked for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Geoghegan, a vegetarian who worked in the Georgetown University admissions office, decided that they're were wasting their lives working.

"I’ve grown tired of spending the best hours of my day in front of a glowing rectangle, of coloring the best years of my life in swaths of grey and beige,” Austin wrote on his blog before he quit. “I’ve missed too many sunsets while my back was turned. Too many thunderstorms went unwatched, too many gentle breezes unnoticed.”

The couple documented their year-long journey on Instagram and on a joint blog. As The New York Times put it, they shared "the openheartedness they wanted to embody and the acts of kindness reciprocated by strangers."

“You read the papers and you’re led to believe that the world is a big, scary place," Austin wrote.

“People, the narrative goes, are not to be trusted. People are bad. People are evil."

“I don’t buy it," he continued. "Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own... By and large, humans are kind. Self-interested sometimes, myopic sometimes, but kind. Generous and wonderful and kind.”

However, Austin and Geoghegan's dream trip came to a tragic and gruesome end when they got to Tajikistan, a country with a known terrorist presence. They were riding their bikes through the country on July 29 when a car rammed them, according to CBS News. Five men got out of the car and stabbed the couple to death along with two other cyclists, one from Switzerland and the other from the Netherlands.

Two days later, ISIS released a video showing the same men sitting in front of the black ISIS flag. They looked at the camera and vowed to kill "disbelievers," according to The New York Times.

Some conservatives have framed the tragedy as a cautionary tale about not just the perils of travel but also naivete in general. In their telling, an overly generous understanding of human nature is behind much of today's progressive movement, including calls to radically scale back immigration enforcement and policing and support for socialism.

Some liberals, for their part, might view Austin and Geoghegan as martyrs in the struggle for a better world, or simply as unfortunate.

These stories make me continue to wonder, WTF is wrong with people? Why are they so stupid? Why do they think they can change and show the world?

The Radical Muslim World has hated everyone else since the beginning of Time, why do people think that can change that?

Foreigners cycling across the middle east is not uncommon, you just don't hear about those stories. You only hear the ones that support small minded beliefs and keep people living in fear of the big bad terrorists. Not sure if this is the same article as mergie posted, but I've never read such BS propaganda as that one. Ended the article with admonishing parents. Please keep your children small minded and scared, so they won't challenge that notion that working 50-60 hours a week to make someone else rich is the not only the best way of life, any other choice will result in death. lol.

“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

I want to appologize for bringing this up. After posting it I found this verse that admonished me for

    Romans 14:1-3
Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. One person's faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.
The verse is probably more about "spiritual foods" rather than actual food but taking it literally, I regret my post.

No doubt. But don't let the fear of dying keep you from living. I imagine they lived more in that one year than most people will in a lifetime

Maybe so. Thankfully it doesn't seem they procreated. We have enough dumb asses as it is.
The Elites don't fear the tall nails, government possesses both the will and the means to crush those folks. What the Elites do fear (or should fear) are the quiet men and women, with low profiles, hard hearts, long memories, and detailed target folders for action as they choose.

No I promise you I’ve lived more than those stupid fuckers. They werent out there beating the fear of dying. Sounds like they were modern day hippies with stupid idealism that met the real world. That said it’s bad they died. But come on. How stupid can you be? Riding a bike through ISIS territory? Hell I want to run over bicyclists here when they ride side by side and won’t get single file and let cars past and I’m not even a goat fucker. Real world 1 idealist 0

I bet if you could have asked them how they felt about your statement as they were bleeding out, they would probably disagree. MG

You can live you life to the fullest without being an idiot. I’d much rather watch the sun come up on a S.C. lake then bike across the Middle East but if that’s what you consider “living to the fullest” then knock yourself out.

Having seen sunsets in both locations I assure you nothing is better than a sunrise over US soil
Seeing these soulless vanilla ice lookin Yankees on a bassboat is worse than watching a woman get her implants taken out. It's just wrong. Get back in your Lund and go back to infisherman.
