You on a well? I had to have my well and water heater flushed twice with bleach. The smell is from what I am told is a harmless bacteria in the water that the heating element in certain hot water heaters causes to smell. Usually if you use the hot water heater regularly it shouldn’t be a problem. My problem was when the hot water heater wasn’t used for a couple months. Good luck
flush the tank and Replace the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum-zinc rod
What cburns said.
For nothing will be impossible with CHRIST Luke 1:37
Heard that rod thingy could be culprit, thanks for confirmation
something w the magnesium causes certain bacteria and sulfur to create hydrogen sulfide gas.
are you running off a well?

Both a pure aluminum or pure magnesium rod can cause the odor. He's right about changing to an aluminum-zinc rod.
Taking the temperature up above 135 degrees is an excellent way to scald someone in a matter of seconds! If you have any kids or older people either staying in the house, or visiting, you'd be inviting serious injuries setting the temp above 135 degrees unless you have a temperature mixing valve on the outlet side of the water heater (which I don't believe is mandated in SC so most houses don't have them).

Might be your well tank if it has a bladder.
If so, you'll have to change to a galvanised tank to fix it...
