I have been thinking about dogs again and was wondering about life with a Boykin. Have never owned one.
Family pet and occasional bird picker-upper. I want to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly.
And...GO.

Crops are harvested, animals are killed.
In all seriousness. We had one growing up. She was a pretty good dog. She loved to chase squirrels. Chewed on a ton of stuff, to include eating a hole in the bathroom wall, the corner of my Dad's Bible, and the couch. But overall still a good dog and pet.

mine is 9mo old +/- and slept at my feet this morning as I wrote about Rhett. He just kept looking up at me as if he knew to stay there quietly....
if you have an active household and spend a lot of time out of doors, they are worth the effort.

Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.
I aint seen one yet I would feed . But I have heard rumors of decent dogs .
I used to drink like a fish and run like a dog
Done a whole lotta shit not permitted by law
People call me the Picasso of painting the town
Lab snob here to be sure, but there are many great Boykins I’ve seen hunting as well as competing.
Start by contacting Blaine Tarnecki or Eric Grubbs.

Blaine lives about 30 minutes from me. Great trainer and superb LBDs. Highly recommend him.

Just Damn.
The few I have seen have really impressed me. It’s not all doom and gloom like most on here say. I keep my bosses Boykin when he goes out of town and she is awsome. I have owned tons of labs but few would rival her desire to retrieve. Damn does she love water also. You can’t keep that dog out of the swimming pool she swims laps for the hell of it.
They are high strung
Im keeping one for a buddy while hes at the beach. I had to have my brother come get all my guns out of the house or there was gonna be a dead boykin and holes all through the house..
Our Boykin was never high strung. One of the easiest to train , most eager to please dogs I have ever owned. She is a dandy.
Always been a Lab owner, but our Cooper is a damn fine dog. She is 11 now and a new dog is on the horizon.. Being in close proximity to Blaine Tarnecki's place is pulling me in that direction for sure. Boykins have panache.

In all seriousness I have never owned one, but heard multiple people say they can be a little nippy around small children. So that might be something to check into depending on the age of the kids around.
Mine has been great. I don’t duck hunt much but shoot a lot of doves. If I was a full fledge duck hunter I might would look for a dog that’s more suited for cold and bigger birds. I would love to see all the doves that mine has picked up through the years. He’s probably picked up more in one season than most would pick up in their life.
Real high strung..

I grew up with boykins in the house. Never really trained them to hunt, but they would retrieve ducks if we took them. One of them would go under water if a bird dove. She would also swim down the anchor rope and attempt to bring up the anchor when you threw it out.

Buddy of mine had a LBD growing up. That little dog had a brick about half his size that he would carry around in his mouth. All day long he would drop the brick in a new spot and then bury a little dirt on it and then lick it off. ALL DAY LONG. Crazy ass dogs!
Also know of several that bit small children in the face and had to be shipped away.
Knew of one the size of a cat. His owner got teased mercilessly on a trip to Mississippi until that little dog brought in more specks than the labs.
Boykins are a crap shoot in my opinion.
Labs are more of a sure thing.
