You may want to keep all notes, records, etc. for the next time it is assessed. I would probably also tell my story at the next council meeting.

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!

    Thanks guys.
True on all accounts. Damn the baseball bat was tempting.
It truly was the most crooked thing that government ever pulled on me. HUD has a definition of accessory dwelling. The reduced value and having everything taxed at 4% was huge.
Lawyer was $250/hr and appraisal was $400. I will get another bill from both because both were present at the review board hearing. Honestly, the appraiser sealed the deal.

Inforn your councilmen and sign up for the next meeting. Local government is more corrupt than federal in many counties.

Is the assessor an elected official?

No. Tax Auditor is an elected position. Assessor isn't.

Someone elected is in charge of the assessor. That’s who you hound. They probably would like to be re-elected, and shit runs downhill.

Good for you man. I can't stand that crooked ass crap. Can't tell you how many run ins I have had with code inspectors, assessors etc that are on a power trip and have a grudge against a moderately successful whiskey mike.

Best thing to do is suck it up and pay the taxes or risk losing it.

That or put in a life estate and if there for 5 yrs it is my understanding that it is protected from Medicaid if she ever comes to that

Well everything is in my name. The state code and having a family member living in it. These accessory dwellings are getting to be a big thing because of aging parents and generational living situations. Some counties have specifically defined accessory dwelling. Some even limit the sq. Ft. HUD defined it as smaller than main dwelling.

Another thing is don't split the parcel and make sure the other dwelling has the exact address, not an A ot B. They wanted to that during building permitting, but I talked them out of it.
