A North Carolina man and his daughter are recovering from injuries suffered when a coyote attacked the child and the man pulled it off her, according to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office.

The man told deputies his 7-year-old daughter was playing on a swing in their backyard Saturday afternoon at their home near Mocksville when he heard something. He said he ran outside and saw what he believes was a coyote attacking the girl. He said he pulled the coyote off his daughter and it ran off.

The man received stitches around his eye and child needed stitches for a bite on her thigh.

Deputies were unable to locate the animal, and the Sheriff’s Office posted a warning on Facebook that the coyote is still on the loose.

The Saturday attack was the second coyote attack reported in Davie County this year. In March, a 9-year-old girl was attacked by a coyote at her home near Interstate 40 in Advance, between Statesville and Winston-Salem. Investigators said a coyote followed the child as she walked up to the door of her home. Her mother was able to stop the attack. The girl suffered minor injuries, officials said.

In February, a family in their car near Charlotte had a frightening encounter with a coyote that snarled, showed its teeth and attacked the vehicle. The father. John Schroter, called 911, and animal control officers captured the coyote a short time later.

"If we had been walking a dog or just out we would have been definitely attacked by it," Schroter told WBTV

The coyote was euthanized. It later tested positive for rabies.

Schroter posted pictures of the snarling coyote on Facebook.

Rabies is uncommon in coyotes, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission officials said.

More than 90 percent of the confirmed cases of rabies in the United States in 2015 came from bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
