58# following an event a couple years ago where being able to shoot well in the yard resulted in an adrenaline dump on an elk and NOT BEING ABLE TO DRAW!! (that really friggin SUCKED for the record!!)

You would be AMAZED at what low poundage (especially from modern compounds) will launch an arrow cleanly throgh a deer.

47# on the recurve and 56# on the compound. Either will punch holes in a deer if I do my job.

shoot what is comfortable and what your bow shoots well. I shoot 67# out of my current compound bow...while my recurve is 61#. The best shooting bow I ever had was a Browning Mag Reflex that I shot better at 83# (which was its max setting) than I have ever shot any other bow. I still am a bit old school in thinking that a bow shoots better when dialed down at its max. Unfortunately that bow ws stolen or I would still be shooting full length XX75s and 125 gr Thunderheads. What I am saying is you have to fool around and find what works well for you.

All of my recurves pull about 55lbs. Never had any trouble pulling them with good form (in my own mind) and then I started doing some light weight training about a year ago. My shooting started to improve immediately. I think most people that shoot bows are over bowed. The advantage from a few extra pounds is probably all but wiped out by poor form and lack of flexibility in hunting situations. My next bow (or set of limbs) will be short and probably pull about 45lbs....there's a gobbler out there who just got a bad itch at the sound of that.

    Mathews Outback 72 lbs.

Whatever poundage you set your bow at, make sure you can pull it back consistantly with good form.
