    Default Fiber Speeds?

We are fixing to get fiber here and figured I would check and see what speeds those of you who have it are running?

60, 120 and 240 Mbps are in our price range, we have roku/PlayStation TV, a laptop and cell phones on our wireless now. Also, any local people have any reviews on the WCTEL fiber?

If it's a true 60mpbs service, a normal household with 3 smart tv's a few cell phones and laptops will never need more than 60

I thought this was going to be a question for labhumper about which fiber worked the fastest.

Those are not speeds, they are a monthly data plan. I would bet your speed will be around the 3-6Mbps range, possibly topping out at 10Mbps at the beginning for the billing cycle. If I were you I would start at 120 then you can decide after the first month when you get your bill if you need more or less.

Their website states those numbers as mbps so that would be speed. 60 is plenty. At that speed how fast your website loads will be limited by your device's processor more than your internet speed.

Fastest internet in the world is South Korea, 25.3Mbps. Average US speed is around 11Mbps. It is a marketing ploy. Run a speed test on your own internet by a simple Google search "speed test". I'm certainly no expert, but no one is getting 60Mbps in their house.

Download or upload? This is on WiFi, it's much faster in my office with Ethernet. And I'm in a rural area not Raleigh.

You don't know what you are talking about. That is averaged speeds. Friend in charlotte has fiber with 1gig connection speeds. Speed test on his line is any where from 540mbs to over 800mbs depending on test site selected. His bottle neck is the service provider at the distant ends speeds, not his own. watched him down load a 4 gig file in less than 11 min using ssd. (Solid state drives).

60mbs is plenty to stream 2 4k movies at the same time with plenty left over lite gaming or serious surfing. The only reason for higher is serious online gaming. Fiber is just that fast.

    In a word. WRONG

I pay for and get 25. And that's on copper. They offer 50 but I'm not close enough to the box. Fiber is a hole other game.

Im most urban areas they offer gigabyte internet over fiber. That would be 1000 mbs. Or 100 times what you think is the fastest.

I get 60+ in my house and I’m on spectrum cooper plant. They offer 100M package as well and it works I just don’t need that much.

The company I work for has lots of fiber plant and offer up to a 1gig service that typically tests in the 800-900 range and not bc it’s getting less but bc the servers we are pinging off of can’t truly test a 1gig.

To the OP it’s important to get a good router to make sure to handle what you need to do.

Thanks everyone for the input. With regard to the router, should I look at routers other than the one that is offered by the fiber company? Again, don't need it for gaming or anything like that, just movies/TV shows via roku (only have one tv in the house), a laptop and a couple phones.

What is wild to me is that we can get the 60 Mbps internet for $40/month which is $30 less than what we pay the cable company for 16 Mbps right now...

For what you have you most likely will be good with what they offer.

The pricing surprises most people. The amount of bandwidth available in fiber networks is so much greater than anything on copper so more to go around for same cost.

What area or road are you on? Last I checked 20% or so of the fiber had been installed. The overhead side will be a lot faster to install but wil slow down when we go to installing it underground. Hearing mostly compliments from our consumers.
