    Default Transporting Kyaks

We are planning a trip from NC to Tampa area of FL and Im wanting to take the yaks with us to fish some canals. Anyone have any recommendations on roof racks for yaks on a midsize SUV, Toyota 4Runner. I see the double racks that you just bolt to your existing roof cross members and the yaks sort of ride on their sides. That looks a little shady for a run down 95 but I've never used them before so I may just be overly cautions. Both yaks are 10-12' but not overly wide. In fact I feel like Im riding on a telephone pole with my big ass in them.

They will come off- I had a Thule box rip off in a cross wind last weekend. Reinforce whatever you are loading so it doesn't kill the person behind you.

i carry mine on Yakima racks all the time.

I use Ratchet straps across each kayak to secure.

I also have little loops fastened under the hood. I tie a bow line to the loop that sticks out from under the hood and a stern line to the tie down in the bed of the truck. I clamp it down good with a truckers hitch and off we go.

I had the ratchet strap wiggle loose once but the bow and stern lines held it in place to be able to restrap.

What year 4 Runner? Definitely upside down side by side is safer. Yakima racks, in my opinion, are the best for this. I can give you more specifics if you get the year model.

That’s what scares me the most, not loosing the yaks.

I got Malone cross bars for mine. I use ratchet straps and a tie on each end, front handle to tow hook and rear handle under the hitch for interstate. For around town I just use two straps in line with the cross bars and I’m good to go. Picked up the kayak in Knoxville and drove it out to NW Iowa. Never had any issues with it.

I’ve had two native ultimates upside down and an old town sit on top in a J rack on 66” bars.

Yeah most brands make different widths, could be an option to get the width of your kayaks and find cross bars to fit

I have always been pleased with Yakima racks. In high school I could fit 5 kayaks on the top of my white 92 Honda Accord. I think I could almost get airborne driving down highway 25 next to cliffs valley with the right wind. Anyway, I used an attachment like this with cam straps(NRS straps are my favorite). https://yakima.com/products/bigstack...102.1613854270

I've got some soft surfboard racks you can borrow. It'll protect your roof.

Hey Moose. This is what you need with the medium size bars. Strap the kayaks upside down side by side. 2 straps each. They will not come off. I like to use cam straps instead of ratchet straps because you can feel the pressure you are putting on them and they don't dig into the plastic.

Let me know if you need any assistance or help with this too. I do this professionally and am pretty well known in the Yakima world.
