    Default Family Boat

I don't know crap about them, but wife has been hinting she would like one, and kids are getting old enough to be pulled around the lake. Guy at work may be selling his 97 Maxum 1700 SR. Which is a 17' with a 3.0 liter mercruiser in it. I haven't looked at it yet but he sais its in decent shape, seats are intact, motor has been stored each winter ext. ext. He through out 2500 which seems fair to me. Anyone know anything about this setup, hull, motor, what should I look for if I go look at it. Keep in mind, I'm a Jon boat tiller handle kind of person.

Ive had several people that have owned inboards tell me to run far away from them.

Same here never heard anything good about them. Would look for something with an out board.

Only if you are a mechanic.

Outboards are the way to go. Stay far far away from an inboard... And a maxum at that. If you do decide to go inboxed make sure it is a mercruiser and not a dang penta.

One of the negatives about this style of boat is it's not much good for anything else other than riding. If you get a good CC you can do almost all activities.

I would prefer an outboard, unless you found a deal on a boat with inboard/outboards. But, speaking to inboard/outboards... There isn't any reason to "run far away from them" other than if you want to keep the boat in the water full time. But the outboard has several advantages so that's the way I would go.

As far as ️️boats go...There are a million options. I would try and test drive a few and crawl around some at a dealership. See what fits your family the best and works for 80% of your uses. Everyone is different. It's like picking out a car.

You need to look hard at a bass boat. Plenty of power to whiplash your kids on a kneeboard so that your wife can go back in the house to take care of em and you can drive to the nearest party cove or sandbar and do some cheatin

Nothing wrong with a inboard/outboard. They are harder to work on, but just like anything, PMS goes a long way! Pontoons are great family boats IMHO, but are limited when it comes to pulling anything other than a knee board or tube.

I picture this as an intro boat for the price. If we want to upgrade when the kids get bigger then we have the option.

    I'm kinda looking too.

It seems that you won't get much with 2500....more like 10k for something 'decent'.
