After realizing the birds on my usual place were severely henned up and they needed some time, I came home and spoke with a good friend of mine who had broken a gobbler off from hens the day before and was going to make a quick run on this one thursday am before work. He was where he should have been, but when he hit the ground he decided to strut straight across the field, bypassing our ambush spot and double/triple gobbling conservatively 100 times. He got over the ridge in the field and we rushed through a cutover swamp to try to get in front of him. He had flat covered some ground but we got to a patch of woods just in time. finally got him turned and committed. Little did I know this would be the best bird I have ever killed, and the first with my M1 20 that Capt Tom dipped for me a while back. 18 lbs, 10 5/8 beard, l spur 1 1/2, r spur 1 7/16. Scored 68.62. My buddy killed his identical twin that was running with him two weeks prior.
