They died.
Headed to Callison this morning in hopes of getting a turkey. Heard three but couldn't do anything with them. Cousin asked me "wanna g to the other side and set up or call it quits?" I said "let's go to the house, I know where a good bream bed is. I kept 25 there yesterday lets go catch some more". On the way back I decided to pull in at the farm and try get one to gobble. Got out at the gate and hit the box call at 8:35 and two answered on the back of they hayfield.
Slipped in behind what we call the swamp pond and headed their way when they gobbled on their own. They had cut some distance and were close. We sat down right there and I clicked off the safety. They were gobbling and coming in steady from my right which was perfect cause I shoot left handed. Saw the first head pop up and got on him just as he slipped between two trees. I didn't wanna shoot through the gap so when the second popped out I shot him and he hit the ground without even flopping. The first bird took off and ran about 20 yds and stopped and started putting. But he was behind some brush and I didn't have a shot. Then he ran back to where he was originally standing and I shot him while on the run. He rolled over and then got up and started flying straight to me and I shot him out the air. 2 Dead birds at 8:50
Beautiful morning to be in the woods.
The larger bird was 17lbs 7 oz and had an 11" beard. The second bird was 14 1/2lbs with a scraggly 10" beard. Both had 3/4" spurs.
