A Nation of Sheep Breeds a Government of Wolves!
If someone in the Upstate has applied for boxes for this year, and wants to get at least one installed in the next few weeks for this year's nesting, I've got a fairly new DNR box (with a varmint guard) sitting outside that I haven't had time to install yet. The other new ones I've got are installed and ready to go.
You will need a 4" x 4" x 8'-10' post as these didn't come with posts this time.
You are welcome to come get it and give me one back when you get yours later this Spring. Just PM me.

I've been riding the Santee River in August and seen a woodie hen with a young brood. Wood duck hens have been known to breed twice a year in climates like ours. They're also strong renesters, so if they try and fail, thye'll likely try again.
My point is don't worry about a deadline. If you get a box in March, still put it up.
I need to service the 6 I have at my in-law's place. Matter of fact, I need to put up a handful more. It's a pretty big swamp.

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!

I've done 20 boxes this week. Kicked out two owls20170128_133338.jpg
Seen a few stories of owls raising wood ducks. But Id guess they moved in after the eggs were layed.
If anybody wants them.
I've got some boxes I picked up from DNR for other people two years ago. They never came and got them from me.
I have the guards for sure and maybe the post if 8' will work.
Call or Text me @ 803-230-0177 I'm in Rock Hill
For some unknown reason they supplied 8' post.
We (Lakelands Delta Waterfowl Chapter) are going to be putting up 12 boxes on the national forest around here this weekend and one thing I wanted to see about was how y'all mount the boxes to the post? Seems that some hang boxes on nails, some nail to post and some screw to post. Just trying to figure out how to go about it with a side opening door?

I've got the new style DNR box with the side door.
I use 3" galvanized lag bolts, with a socket and a battery powered drill driver. You can also just use a socket wrench.
The bottom one is bolted in to the back board just below the bottom of the box. For the top one, you open the door about 30-45 degrees or so and using a drill driver you look through the front hole while reaching around and through the side door. To get to the top bolt you just can't open the door all the way or it gets in the way of the bolt.
Keep in mind that it is easier if the holes are pre-drilled so you can manually start the bolts and they'll be at least a little snug. That keeps you from dropping bolts in the water, etc.
If you have a Keyhole router bit of the right size for the holes in the rear board of the box, you could just screw the bolts in the pre-marked spots and slip the box on. It will most likely take a few bolt adjustments to get them snug, but it works great if the boxes are in areas that aren't in danger of high enough water to push the boxes up and off the bolts.

Thanks, one more question. Where have y'all gotten the sheet metal for the predator guards from? I haven't been in store but just searching online, it looks like the widest sheet metal lowes/home depot carries is 24" wide and I am trying to find 36" wide?

I've been using 4 inch deck screws with no problems. Pre-drilled holes definitely will help. When I am working solo, I prop/lean a 6ft ladder up against the pole and rest the box on top of it.
I think the newer SCDNR instructions tell you to jig out two, tear drop notches on the box. Attach two lag bolts on the pole. Line them up and slide the box on the bolts sticking out.
