Come to find out, the buck was on the "crawl away" through a steep ravine and was crawling up the other side. My brother walked within 20 yards of him coming to me. The buck took another bullet to the neck once we found where he was. I posted a photo of the bullet fragment somewhere in scducks. Crazy shit happens when you shoot deer! This was with a 270.

I've shot probably 25 deer with a .243, and every damn one of them ran with a pass thru shot. Hardly any blood trail. They all piled up though
You don't kill deer. I know better than that.

I've killed 16 deer with a .243 and every one had a pass through but one. It was a 195# 7 point and I shot him quartering away and the bullet lodged in the off side shoulder. Deer never bled a drop but only ran 20 yards. Every other one dropped or bled just as well as the ones I've shot with larger calibers.

By "ran" I mean they didnt walk away, they literally ran. Some went 20-30 yards, some went 50-60 yards. Sorry, didn't mean to sound like they went 200 yards or farther.

I've also killed a doe with a 7 mag, that ran 100 yards up hill before she piled up. Exit hole was at least 4 inch diameter. Like I said, deer do weird things when shot.

If you practice and your gun hits where you want then you hit him.. was his tail up or down? Yes its very likely that he didn't bleed externally thus why you don't have a blood trail..

Don't let the 243 haters fluff ya, with a good bullet the 243 does the trick and well. I still opt for horsepower and heavyweights but have killed plenty with smaller.

If you can't find a tracking dog, find a lab or dachsund, terrier or whatever and go give it a shot in the morning just let the dog do his thing and watch him.. Or you can circle search in the direction he ran.. take your time, be calm and go slow or better yet have a friend or two help.. Good luck.. Keep us posted.

Second the dog idea!! That's ur best bet. Like everyone has said, deer do crazy and different things when shot. We have all killed or shot deer that bled or didn't bleed... If the dog can't find him.... Count ur loses! But good luck and keep us up to date
