Egyptian wheat is good but it will eventually fall over. Then you are back to square one.

You guys that keep mentioning Egyptian wheat need to read my post above. It will lodge(fall over) at some time after maturity. Switchgrass may be a better answer though I have never planted it.

I realize that it is classified as invasive, but it can be managed. It grows pretty quick, and makes a very good barrier (thick, and up to 10 feet tall). It is also something that does not have to be replanted. My understanding of the original post was that he wanted something that would grow fairly quickly and make a good and somewhat permanent barrier.

Miscanthus giganteus. Won't have to replant every year like EW.

Dear god yes. If anyone spent as much time as I have swinging a bush ax on that mess you would too.

It does grow quick and would certainly fit the bill for growing under trees though. But watch it or it will be in your whole orchard.

    Bumping this to the top....

Got a new property that we need to add a privacy screen on some road frontage. Is it too late to plant Egyptian wheat this year? I saw it matures in 110 days or so. We only need it to get about 4 feet tall or so to block most of the road frontage due a rolling hill.

If too late this year for Egyptian wheat, what are some other suggestions? Thanks

    I would say yes,
    ...it's too late.

I've never planted it this late but I use Sunn Hemp to block the view on a powerline ROW. It grows to 6-8 feet tall and will die but still stay standing to block the view. As a bonus, deer love it but can't eat it fast enough to stunt it.
