    Default Home Computer

Looking at getting a "basic" home computer. Will be for basic family computer usage (Internet, pictures, basic documents, etc.) Thinking all-in-one desktop or laptop, but we have 2 iPads so they cover most of our portability needs.

Like to stay in 5-600 dollar range, but willing to pony up a hair more for a machine that will "last" longer.

Go ahead and get you a Mac. Extremely easy to use. My 56 year old dad figured one out and he hardly knows/knew how to turn on a computer.

I made the switch from PC to Mac almost two years ago and have loved it. Absolutely zero problems with mine either in the almost two years I have owned it.

MAC is not in the budget right now, might wind up holding off for one but will be a while before able to spring for the MAC

Don't go mac unless you enjoy paying twice what something is worth.

Just get you a standard HP, Dell, or any other reputable machine from a "local" source.

You'll likely get plenty of warranty and a machine that is capable of doing much more than you are in the $600 range.

Specs will run the price up pretty quick. So, decide what you NEED and roll with it.

A Mac is definitely expensive but they're worth it in my opinion. I've had a Macbook pro for about 3 years and its never had a single issue. However the PC's at work get viruses all the time.

If you are getting "viruses" on your work PC, you need a new IT guy and to stop surfing porn sites while you're on the boss' dime.

I didn't say the viruses was on my PC. Those computers are used for work use only, one got a virus that was tracked back to the HTC home page.

Another vote for Mac, SCduckhunter 1979, and Stubby convinced me, cry once, buy once. All this is from a person that is 64 and resist change.

I have already gotten my money out of my mac. In the same time period I have owned a mac, I had bought one Dell and one HP computer that were not cheap and were not "shitty" computers by any means.

Save up and get a Mac.

I've been out of the IT world for a while but I'd look at Lenovo or HP. Mess on Dell.

I bought a Lenovo for my office, from BestBuy earlier this year. It has worked out well so far, but with all the add-ons it was around $750.

in general, you'll get a better deal on a desktop vs a laptop. in terms of hardware specs to dollars. also less likely of getting physical damage from being moved around the house. you hunt have to hunt it or the charger down either.

look at a used iMac. search craigslist, 2009 or newer, slap a ssd in it and you are set, in or less than your price range

Just buy the parts off newegg and put it together. Easy stuff and can learn a bit. If you don't want to pick each individual part can buy partial kits.... if you want a touch screen desktop buy the latest AIO curved screen and I can't remember who's putting it out but they are nice 4k screen computers start around $1700

Sorry Dr. Duck, I'm sure 4k is about as foreign a term for you as HDTV was at one time...

AIO stands for All In One, which means computer attatched to monitor. You can get a cheap 4k monitor for prolly $700 now.... but why buy just the monitor.. Hell you got big money buy the whole AIO kit.
