Hartwell hunters beware...

For those of you who hunt Lake Hartwell, keep a close eye on your dogs.

I was talking to a friend of mine who lives in Sadler's Creek Cove. He said that a couple friends of theirs took their Labs to one of the islands near Portman Marina on Saturday for a few hours to play in the water and every one of them ended up sick and required veterinary care for intestinal problems.

Apparently the rains have produced so much run-off of fertilizers, etc, that SCDHEC has issued some caution warnings (although I haven't seen them). Also, apparently there is a development near the marina that has a private sewer system that has been having discharge violation problems for several years and DHEC has threatened to shut them down. I wasn't aware of this, but it's worth checking in to if you hunt those islands.

I would think you'd be OK if your dog only retrieved birds and you didn't let him/her play in the water for hours like they did. I also wouldn't hunt the island(s) right off Portman Marina. The ones up from there, or right next to the damn might be OK.
