    No, they dont have to be in sight of the pilot. Not sure where your info is coming from, but wifi isn't involved on most quadcopters. Mine uses 2.4ghz for the radio and 5.8ghz for the FPV. If you look up FPV, you'll see you dont need to be able to see the quadcopter.

    Guys are also using 1.3ghz, 900mhz, etc.

    However, because of how the wireless works, the connection on your tx/rx or your vtx/vrx may be limited if there are trees or buildings between you and the toy.

    I was going to buy one to use with my Go Pro but after researching have put it off for a while. I want to fly one by monitor screen as well as looking at the drone.

    Get the phantom 2 vision plus. It's way better because you don't have worry about the sound being recorded on the go pro.

    If you're handy with electronics, look at building one instead of the dji.

    I can mount the gopro on mine but have a set of goggles and camera on the quad to fly in fpv.
