    Default Alternate flag

There is a lot of steam to replace the battle flag with the First Regiment of Rifles SC Volunteers. Someone post a pic please.

It will not accomplish a thing if they stick it on the Statehouse grounds.

Good lookinng flag, but they'll want to take it down soon enough. Any way to get something as close to permanent as possible with regards to keeping monuments and any flag replacement in place?

That's retarded. Why not just fly the state flag if you are going to fly that one? First National or nothing. IMO.

The politicans in columbia dont have the testicular fortitude to make a stand and are just trying to appease as many of their constituents as possible in hopes of getting re-elected.

Cnn has now reported live twice that there isnt the support to remove the flag and there might not be enough votes to have it taken down. What is really going on? Dont tell us what you want. Lets hear the truth!

DT this is freaking comical. You and your spineless cronies don't have the sack to do what should be done. Bought and paid for, that is pretty much the state flag but I am sure someone somewhere will have a problem with it and you will tuck tail and remove it also.

Since when does anyone believe CNN. I bet they don't have the votes with the amendment to change the flag. I believe it will be all or nothing.

As much as they want to see it gone I would think they would be having a field day with it. They actually seemed kind of worried. Never said I believed it but its a far cry from what DT is reporting.

    No DC,

they want to continue to stir controversy and make SC look like a bunch of idiots.

Continuing to suggest there may not be the votes could incite more protests, more national interest, and more attention to this thing.

Again, not having the votes on a bill with an amendment is not the same as not having the votes on a clean bill to take it down.

Agreed this is making our state look like a bunch of fools. That's what they want, they want the rest of the country to go "oh look at poor ol SC". Outside pressure seems to be making more noise then both sides here. We need to circle the wagons, grieve and support the families, and tell the rest of the country to let us take care of our own business.

The Senate has the votes as well or so I'm being told by our Senator here in Summerville. I've had several conversations with him over the last two weeks. BTW, any of you watching the Senate debate this on PBS today? Some of the senators that support taking the flag down are throwing some off the wall hair brain stuff out there. It's damn near comical.

Are any other senators calling them out on it?

According to the live blog on The States website they also suggest there might not be enough votes. Take it for what its worth.

CNN's telling something completely different than news outlets are. Every other reliable media outlet is reporting that the votes are there to do so.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

A letter sent by a friend

Dear President Obama, Governor Haley, and members of the SC General Assembly,

In Greek Mythology we read from the works of the great poet Hesiod a tale of Zeus, the God of the sky, who gave a newly married couple a gift in the form of a simple box or a “pithos”. This gifted box or “pithos” came with one request, never to open. On June 17, 2015, Satin himself entered a House of God in Charleston and brutally murdered 9 innocent Christians. Though this was a horrible act, his work did not end there. He took form, when he left the church, and entered the lives of a few other individuals, determined to destroy everything in this world that is right and cause more hatred and confusion among the good citizens of South Carolina and this great nation.

Within hours of the shooting, a few militant members of the NAACP and the liberal left, determined to destroy this great country, presented you, our elected officials, with a box. This box was given to you in the form of an ultimatum. As many here believe, the situation unfolded as such. With the deaths of the 9 individual in the church, the left turned this tragic event into a negotiable opportunity to complete one of the numbered tasks on their political agenda. They met, as told, with elected officials, behind closed doors, and gave them/you options in the form of a one sided compromise. This ultimatum was simple, but also complex. You and the elected officials, as assumed, were asked if you wanted the City of Charleston and towns across this state to be burned by lawless thugs, many imported from other areas of the country. You and the other elected officials, rumored, said no. In return for calling off these masses, you were presented a bail out or sell out as we call it, and asked to remove the Confederate Flag from the State House grounds. What has happened to justice in this country? Is this going to start a pattern of things to come? What has happened to our values and our morals?

You, along with the liberal militants have now joined forces and the magic show has started and below described will show one of two ways how it will end. You have completely taken all blame for the event off of a deranged racist lunatic, doing satins work, and applied all that is wrong in this country and state to the Confederate flag. Shame on you! Shame on you! Being good citizens, we should all be focusing on how to deter this type of crime and bringing harsher punishments on those who commit hate crimes and burn our great cities, as we all know the only way to prevent crime is to deter crime.

Though 9 Christians were killed at Mother Emanuel, over 20,000 of South Carolinas finest young men, black and white, Jew and Gentile, men of all races, creeds and religions, died in this States service under that flag, the soldier’s flag. When asked by the State of South Carolina to do their duty to defend this state, they stepped up to the call and sacrificed their every tomorrow in her defense and you and the legislature are considering selling them out, they did not sell us out as they fought to the bitter end. With their life’s blood running from their bodies on the field of battle I assure you, they were thinking only about South Carolina, being back here, in this great state with their family and their friends. Many widows were left alone in this state and many children fatherless, forever. Many were never seen again or even given a Christian burial. Left on the field of battle to rot and be eaten by the vultures of the air and the beast of the fields.

The Confederate Flag which flies on the grounds is an actual battle flag, a soldier’s flag. This flag was adopted by the Army of Northern Virginia, Lees Army. As you all know, Robert E. Lee was an abolitionist, he hated slavery and wanted it to end. Lee thought it, the institute of slavery, was an evil, he fought for his state, not for slavery, just like many of these men honored on our states grounds. That flag also has local ties; the designer of that flag was from here in South Carolina and grew up in Walterboro. His name was William Porcher Miles, served as mayor of Charleston, in the House of Representatives and after the war, President of the University of South Carolina. It is a Christian flag and represents by its symbols the Cross of Saint Andrew.

Governor Haley and elected officials of South Carolina, Pandora’s Box has unfortunately been placed in your lap. You have a big decision to make. This decision could be complex or it could be easy. I and many other voters and tax payers in this state would take the easy route. This being said, a compromise was made in 2000 that would place the Soldiers flag next to the monument in Columbia the soldiers War Memorial. Many think this memorial has no place on state grounds, but I differ with that opinion, as these men served the State of South Carolina, died for the state of South Carolina, they have every right to be memorialized, with their beloved banner on property owned by the State of South Carolina!

This decision of continuing the compromise is the easy route. If peace and love truly prevail in this state as reported, if this state is now bonded in love and unity and we are coming together to finally understand and respect each other, we can move on with the flag in place. Put Pandora’s Box back on the shelf, lock the door and bury the key for good as well as this discussion. Let us not be like the Federal Government in its practices with the Native Americans, we southerners honor our agreements and contract. Leave the flag in its compromised position, where it should be, honoring these men who died for this state.

The other option is for you and the state legislator to actually open this gifted box. As you know from reading the story of Pandora what followed. With this situation, this is what will take place which in the long run, will destroy not only the State of South Carolina, but our Nation as a whole. It will result in a never ending plague. A plague that will continue to result in more hatred and racism. A plague that will destroy the very fiber of our being and result in the total demise of our beloved Republic.

Once the flag is removed from its compromised honored position next to the Confederate Memorial we the people will have no choice but to remove all of the monuments and symbols of this state and nation. As Mrs. Haley said, the flag does not represent all of the people of South Carolina and has no place on state grounds, the people’s grounds. It has also been said by a few that the South, the Confederacy, and its monuments represent slavery, oppression, treason, and racism. I do not agree with that at all, but since we are on that subject, lets you and I take a walking tour of the State House grounds and the surrounding area as well as our Nation’s Capital.

To begin with, directly between the Confederate Memorial and the state house, you will see a statue, one of six ever made, of our “first” President George Washington. Yes he was a great man and revered to by many, but his statue must be removed as he was a slave owner. At the time of his death, he owned 317 slaves. As for our Confederate soldiers, black and white, only 3% of them owned slaves. George has to go.

Looking up at the Capital we see at the top of the Dome the American Flag. Yes, you are correct; this will have to be removed and replaced with a new flag. It represents oppression, racism, and slavery. Our country was founded in 1776 as we declared our Independence from England. Slavery was here before our move to independence and it remained legal under Federal law until the war ended and the 13th amendment was passed in 1865. An attempt was even made by our Federal Government in 1861 to forever allow slavery in the states that desired it in the form of an amendment to the Constitution. This was not only proposed, it was acted on, and ******* himself supported it as well as President Buchannan. It passed both the US House and Senate by a wide majority vote and was sent out to the states to be ratified, three of them, two northern, did so, it was called the Corwin act. This flag also represents racism in many forms. Take the KKK, a worthless organization within itself, they use the Confederate flag in their ceremonies, but they also use the American Flag and the Christian flag. We as sons of the south are as upset about the misuse of our flags by these groups as you. If we are taking down the soldiers flag because it is used by the KKK, the US flag has to go as well.

Also, what in the world did we do to our Native people under this, the American flag? If you are not sure, ask a Native American how he or she feels about it and the social genocide committed upon their people under it. Actually, in writing this letter to you marks the anniversary of Custer’s death at the Battle of Greasy Grass near the Little Big Horn River in Montana as he attempted to murder the brave men, woman and children of the Lakota Sioux.

Below the US flag you will see our current state flag. It is a Confederate Flag. It was adopted by the Republic of South Carolina on January 28, 1861 and served as its National Flag for a short period. This flag was changed by the secession government of this state on that date to show the Palmetto tree in its current form. Upon entering the Confederacy, that flag also went into battle with 3% of our slave owning troops. It must go!

The beautiful Capital building itself adorned with all of its ornate features are revered by all as one of the most beautiful of state houses. Its magnificent Corinthian Columns are among the largest in the world measuring 43 feet in height, cut and wrought from a single stone. Sad, but this building must be removed as this represents not only the heart of Secession; it was built by a Major in the Confederate Army. After his death, the work was continued by his son, who also served in the Confederate Army.

On the other side of the state house, we find many statues. Most notable, is the one of Strom Thurmond. This statue must be removed. Even his son Paul said last week, he was ashamed of his ancestors. This would include his father who was a segregationist. He really made a show of himself in opposing the Civil rights act where he not only opposed it, but delivered the longest filibuster in this nation’s history. It has to go. Way to go Paul!

We then see the statue of Ben Tillman. Need I say more, but I will. Look at the history of this guy. He hated blacks! Let’s look at actions in the massacre of blacks in Hamburg in 1876. As Tillman arrived in Hamburg, a little late for the slaughter, he was upset that he missed the fight, two of his men brought two black men before him, who were there to investigate the slaughter. One of them was Senator Simon Coker. He, Tillman, had them kneel and pray to God for their lives, during the prayer they were shot and killed. Look at the Lynching laws of this state. His statue must go.

The Statue of Wade Hampton has to be removed as well. Known, not only as a famed General in the Confederate Army, he is looked upon today by the liberal world as a “white terrorist”. Though he opposed separation from the Union, he fought for his State. After the war, as the occupying Union forces denied human civility to our states people, he and others grew tired of the radicals and took back our state. Being a Confederate General, it has to be removed.

How about the Statue of Calhoun, the father of States’ Rights and in a lot of the historic circles of this county, the father of old honest Abe himself. His statue must go. The African monument must be removed as well. It shows men from the 1st South Carolina Colored Troops on it. Men, like many of these represented, participated in the burning of our towns, the theft of our ancestors personal property and the rape of our woman and young girls, both black and white. This marker must go.

This list can go on and on. We have not even touch the interior of the State House; we have not discussed the Governor’s Mansion itself and its history of racial hatred and oppression as it served as home of the Arsenal Cadets, who would serve the Confederacy. Speaking of that, how about the Citadel, both the Arsenal and the Citadel were formed around 1842 to assist in repulsing slave revolts and guard munitions at the states arsenals. The Citadel fired the 1st shot of the war and the last shot east of the Mississippi, losing 243 of the schools finest men, honored by our monument in Columbia. They still wear Confederate era uniforms and their beloved “band of gold” reflects its Confederate service.

Let us briefly make our way next to our nation’s capital. The District of Columbia will have to be renamed; the memorials of Washington, Jefferson, and ******* (racist, read his work) will have to be moved. Due to the fact that the Vietnam War was controversial, that memorial must go as well. Even the State of Washington must be changed. I cannot believe we would name a state in this Union after a slave owner.

Governor Haley, in speaking to the press, said that the State House was a building that represented all the people of South Carolina. Basically, that being said nothing deemed offensive to a group should be placed on its grounds or within its walls. Christmas time, I do not want to see a Christmas tree anywhere on State or Federal property. Everyone in South Carolina is not a Christian. It does not represent all the people. We have here in this state and in this nation a melting pot of many different people. Jews, Christians, Muslims, Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses and non believers. A Christmas tree does not represent all the people. Men and woman are being butchered daily in the Middle East over these religious items, watch the news. Let us not offend anyone.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, the list goes on and on and when will it end? If you, the General Assembly open Pandora’s Box and remove our soldiers’ flag from the soldiers’ monument or any of our Confederate monuments located on State or Federal property, all other monuments listed must go, everything listed here within this letter and the list will continue to grow. From our Nations currency to our Pledge of Allegiance, even to the Black Caucus (we do not have a white caucus in name) as prescribed into law in our State House. If you remove the flag and/or our monuments and do not remove any of the other listed items, this is and will be considered discrimination and suits will follow.

Let us not even touch on paying reparations to our Native Americans. As you know, we stole the very land from them that we live on today. How about reparations from the Government to the slaves and the slave families? How about 40 acres and a mule that was promised? How about payment to the southern people, whites and black, slave and non slave, who lost personal property? The Yankees stole everything they could get their hands on, even dug up our dead and then burned the rest. Where was our Marshall plan?

The solution is simple; LEAVE THE FLAG, PLEASE DO NOT OPEN THE BOX! Prosecute those who misuse this great flag and leave satin and the devil standing alone in shame. Punish those who commit crimes in the name of hate to the upmost realms of the law. These soldiers did nothing to deserve this fate; the flag had no part in this crime or any other crime. If you are going to remove it because the KKK uses it, let’s ban the sale of white bed sheets as they, the KKK, run around in them at night committing these hate crimes. Let’s also ban the sale of products made of cotton, since that is what this entire nation, North and South, in the time of slavery prospered on.

In closing, do what is right, leave the flag and let’s move on to bigger issues. Let us work together to end hate crimes. Removing this flag without removing all other controversial items listed and those to be listed is discrimination in the 1st degree. Many of you are attorneys; you do the math, and add up what will follow with voting to discriminate as well as removing this one flag. This issue will not rest in its removal; it will only open a new chapter of not only discrimination, but question the very sole of our Republic and will end in breaking the strong foundation of this Nation. We study history to learn from the past so we may not repeat errors once made by those who went before us.

As ******* said, we are a “Government of the People, by the People and for the People”; please vote for the people, as we, the people of South Carolina, will be voting for you. These liberals from outside of this state do not have votes in our state and local elections. Please do not waste anymore of our tax money on this issue, it was settled in 2000 and settled it should stay, put Pandora’s Box away. Let the news media move on somewhere else to find another item for their reality TV show. WAKE UP AMERICA.

May God continue to bless you and may God continue to be with the people of the Great state of South Carolina and this Great Nation.

    I am an American,
