I bought a kid a model 12 20 gauge the other day.
They say the only time a fishermen tells the truth is when he tells you another fisherman is a liar.
I bought a 870 youth in 20ga at Christmas and I love it. My son will too as soon as he's big enough to shoot it

Auto or Pump?

Mines a pump.
It's become my new turkey gun

I like the idea of a pump gun for learning how to shotgun... it makes the first (every) shot count way more.

Definitely a pump for her first
Check out the 870 youth compact or the Mossberg Bantam

Academy had the youth 870s for 289 at Christmas. Haven't checked their prices since but I'm pretty sure that was the normal price. If I'm not mistaken the Mossberg was slightly cheaper. Either one is a good choice IMO

I'll probably catch a lot of slack, but oh well. I bought a 20ga NEF Pardner pump in the compact version and love it. It's a little on the heavy side, but for $200 out the door I don't think you can beat it. They are pretty much a clone of the 870.
I still shoot my youth 870... Its my go to gun for rabbits and most dove shoots... I love that thing..
