Jap and rice will grow well in wetter soil.
Dryer soil or plant in the dry season, then look to pearl millet. It is simple and drought resistant.

The only problem with that is it can't be graded. The army core considers it a wet land because it has hydric soil. So I can plow it and plant it but I can't put excavation equipment on it. But I can control the water with a pump. That I already have. I can get about two foot of water. That's why Im leaning towards dwarf corn just did not k ow if anyone had any experience with it.

You said it's about 1.5ft deep?

Dwarf corn ear height is really low. Less than a foot often.

Cannizmaze is usually closer to 2ft

Pioneer has a "duck corn" don't know the #, but I've read reviews on here that the ear placement varies significantly.

They say ear height will vary on soil conditions and planting rates. Makes sense.

Edit: Just read you're only planting 2 acres. You better put a fence around it if you want food in Jan.

I have planted cannimaze and been successful at it. That is saying a lot because i am one of the worst farmers on here.

I would plant canimaze in the deeper areas, and jap millet around the edges in shallow areas.

If there was 10 acres instead to 2, I would say diversify some more.

What fence design de you guys think is the most effective I was going to do the three wire method with one three feet in front of the other two but am open to suggestions. We have already planted some other areas with jap millet and drastically increased out number of woodies but we were looking to try to get other species in there. Though corn or chufa would be the way to go.

Beans will rot in water way too fast.

Here's the deal: Plant corn, corn, and more corn. There is nothing better. Plant jap millet or Chiwapa only in the places where it's impossible to plant corn.

Jap millet sucks and yall put too much emphasis on ear height.
They will get to it regardless of the height.
Stumpknocker, don't waste your money on wild rice!

Why would you say jap millet sucks?

Cause short of growing so easily, it sucks!
Doesn't last and gems at the thought of moisture.

The waterfowl section in that publication from UT is a great read. Thanks for linking it DJP.

    Gems?

What do you normally plant then? I'm trying to learn more about this aspect of the game.

Don't get me wrong, jap is easy to grow and has its place but I put no emphasis on it.

Milo huh? You must be from some place with red clay. That said how is the stand ability of the seed head after a month in the water. When the sorghum around me is dried down enough to combine a good wind will take a fair bit of seed out which I could see as a positive except I would worry that it wouldn't last much past the first of December.

This right here^^^ I halfway agree on the ear height, but if there are low water levels, lower, more accessible ears would get better results.

Millets rot too fast, and are only good for planting where corn won't grow. Plant as much corn as you can, then plant some more.

Milo and sorghum are like Brussel sprouts to ducks, corn is like ice cream and steak. If you must plant a milo/sorghum (and you shouldn't because ducks really don't like them much), then look into Chiwapa.
