Terrible shot selection and he and that elk are lucky.

My kid takes that shot, dead elk or not, he's gettin a boot stuck in his ass.

I'm with Glenn. Absolutely stupid and irresponsible shot.

Marginal shot, at best, on a beautiful animal. I'm with Glenn on not being thrilled with my youngster were he to think that shot was the correct call.
I'm going to heaven for the weather and hell for the company.

Be dangerous, unpredictable, and make a whole lot of noise.

Actually that was dang good shot placement but about 2" off to the right. Frontal shots on elk at close range are not a bad shot, especially if you know you can get full penetration and at eye level.

Yeah. They're all good shots till they aren't.

Terrible and irresponsible shot regardless of range.

You can say that about any shot in the hands of a crappy hunter who can't shoot well, can you not? Personally I think if he is confident in the shot take it. Which he did to great success.

I was under the impression that proper shot placement and hunter ethics still counted for something.

Wonder how many he bloodied up getting that one "cool" one? Never get to see or hear about those.

How many times does an elk come in facing you?

Just speculation as I have not cleaned an elk since 2010.
id say about 6" at that angle, and he was in it.
