POMPEY, N.Y. -- A man shot himself in the foot while duck hunting in Pompey earlier this morning, state police said.

The shooting occurred around 8 a.m. on Route 20, between Pompey Center and Oran Gulf roads, according to Onondaga County 911 dispatch.

As a result, Route 20 was closed in both directions from Pompey Center and Oran Delphi roads, about two miles, while authorities investigated.

State police Trooper Jack Keller said he was unsure if the road had been reopened. The closure is no longer listed on sigalert.com or the state Department of Transportation's 511ny.org website.

State police and Madison County EMS responded to the scene. The state Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating the shooting, Keller said, adding that the shooting appears accidental.
