    Default Tilt/trim leak

Noticed a small puddle (size of half of a dollar bill) on the floor under the stern. The fluid was red. Took the boat out and for some reason while running, the motor will not trim up but will trim down. If I slow down just above idle it will trim up with no problem. What are your thoughts? Experiences?

    Motor is a 1995 Yamaha 40

My '00 Johnson 40 won't stay up. It'll go up...just creeps back down.

Not sure if I need fluid or the cylinder is bad.

My guess is that your seals in the cylinder are bad (like mine). Time for a gasket rebuild kit.

Low fluid want allow you to build pressure. Drain it and fill it back up and add some Lucas transmission stop leak to it. You will have to work the air out of it.

I would think hydraulic but the fluid in it is red. Never seen red hydraulic oil before

Go ahead and replace the seals now or you won't be going in the boat when you want to. You got a puddle now and it's going down on its on. You need new seals. You can put all the transmission fluid in it all you want, but you're gonna have to put new seals in it.

What about for mine? Any input? I've seen no visible fluid. I kinda assume seals, though.

I rebuilt mine this past summer (Johnson 50 POS) made a tool to take off the top cap. That was the hardest part...

    USMCsilver,
I've got a Yamaha that does the same thing. If I run it to the top and bump the button a few more times, sometimes it will stay up. This tells me that the cylinder o-ring likely isn't seating well and needs an extra push to get it sealed.

Mine will pretty much stay up outta the water. However, under powered, I constantly have to keep raising it.
