    Default Fly Fishing

Never done it before but we're going to pigeon forge area to camp this weekend and will be going back in late November to stay for a week. Thought I would give it a shot while I was there. What type of area should I look for to fish? Water depth, current, Lots of rocks, Not many rocks, behind rocks, pockets, etc....? Also, what type of fly should I use? I really have no idea what i'm doing, but thought I could possibly get lucky and catch a few. Like pops always says " A blind hog will find an acorn every now and then". Thanks for the input!

BEST POSSIBLE STRATEGY: find a local, independent flyshop near where you are going and ask them your questions. If you have never done it before, that will be your best avenue IMHO. They can steer you toward well-stocked areas that have fish to be caught rather easily, or if you want to really twist your noodle they can put you on intermediate and advanced "blue lines" if any exist in the area you are going to. I recommend staying where the stocked areas are, for your own enjoyment and personal sanity.

Best thing about mountain stream fly fishing is that even if the fish is the size of a mud minnow, you can still take a glory picture of you holding it gently with your fly rod gripped in your teeth and get accolades from the online community.

There's a feeder on a certain pond close to you, that if you tie a "fish food" fly, it is great practice.

Any farm pond with bream in it will work.

But the one in the middle of a certain cow pasture is one I am talking about.

It's gorgeous up there right now.

I'm thinking about going back next weekend.

The waters are low where I fished and those wild fish can see you from a lot farther away than I expected.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
