    Default My latest hobby

I have really gotten into fly fishing lately. After getting a nice rod, reel, and spending untold money at local fly shops I figured it was time to start tying my own flies. I've got a whole lot to learn yet so I started with the easiest patterns and since there hasn't been much of a hatch lately I figured these might work. A great way to wind down in the evenings.

Learn to tie a jap beetle variation and use that San Juan as your dropper. Deadly on bream, trout, crappie.

Just moved to Colorado and have been doing a lot of fly fishing. It is way too addictive. That copper zebra midge has been on fire near Rocky Mountain National Park. Good looking flies. Keep it up

looks awesome, I switched the biot tails out for rubber legs on stoneflies and have been happier ever since. Biots do look prettier though. Keep tying!

Nice ties. As far as hatches a Dun Caddis dry flies will always work here in SC, NC, TN whenever trout are looking up, a 16-18 grey bodied elk or deer hair caddis. Buying materials is a pain at the start and costly. If you need some "sponsorship" I'll gladly help out with samples.

I have never tied but kinda wanted to. My dad made some of the most amazing flies/bugs I casted with a fly rod so I just kept using his. He did a lot of foam bugs that destroyed the Low Country freshwater fishery and a little for salt too. We'd usually use a bug or popper up top with a nymph about 2-3 ft below and the brimps couldn't resist it. And yes, we caught fish on the pigs.

It's probably more of as saltwater thing but if you want to build a turner for making epoxy coated flies, start looking for an old microwave oven to cannibalize. The turntable motor works perfectly.

Here are some picts of mine.

The output shaft of the motor is a little 1/2" long nylon stub. A 1/4" x 2" pipe nipple will screw over it for the shaft. Slide some rubbery stryofoam onto that and voila, a fly turner.

Very nice. I paint crankbaits every once in a while and I 've tied a few flies and neither are as easy as they look.
