    BOGSTER and trkykilr have given me real pause for thought. I, too, hate to see the loss of something that's such a long-term and integrated component of the lakes ecosystem. However, taking gators over 9' really ensures that females aren't killed (since females are never over 9') so the total population loss is a grand total of one.

    Plus, the only predator of a medium sized gator, besides man, is a large gator. So, removing some of these octogenarian mississippiensis (see what I did there…) may actually boost the population of gators in the long term.
