    Default Low bird

Had a buddy tell me his father in law got kicked out of a dove shoot in bishopville hartsville area. Said he was asked to leave after taking shots at low birds and was peppering a guy and his son. Was told the father returned fire to his FIL. Took a pellet to arm. Anyone at that field. It was last Saturday or Saturday before.

Shooting low birds should and will get you escorted off any field I hunt on.. Labluver, I would have given one warning, then I would have walked up there and made him leave.

A grown man knows the dove hunt rules - no shooting low birds. Period. Dot.

A pellet to the arm hurts less than an ass whipping. What if this thread was about a young man taking a pellet to an eye from some "dumbass" shooting at low birds??

I would have asked him to leave in a heartbeat. Not so nicely either.

Yeah, if I take a pellet that stings, it's not going to be pleasant when I get to the other side of the field.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

So, the FIL was pissed? He should have been told to leave, the return fire was his warning.

Shooting low birds is negligent. It should get you kicked off the field.

Purposely shooting at a man is assault; in front of a kid is contributing to the delinquency. He has created another generation of redneck. He should at the very least been kicked out as well. DNR says a shooting must be reported and investigated. He might have gotten a free ride to jail.

I would also question the word of a man that would "return fire." My definition of getting peppered in a field is shot falling from above.

I wasn't there so I cant speak to what happened or what I would have done. When you dove hunt, shot will rain on you. If it stings or God forbid draws blood something needs to be done immediately to protect everybody involved. Shooting back may have not been the best choice, it sounds as though he did have his boy with him, a shot back in the direction could have been the best thing to make the incoming pellets stop. Hard to armchair quarter back this one. Hope all parties are ok and maybe learned something?

A grown man should be so embarrassed by getting called out for peppering someone that he wants nothing more than to leave a dove field after apologizing profusely.

X2. I agree with LabluvR. The recipient of the low shot should have had the balls to go over to the shooter and explain the rules and etiquiete of a Dove Shoot to him. Then, the hunt master should have told the shooter to leave.

Going to jail, fighting, shooting at one another, getting kicked out of the shoot etc all over a little bird. Just damn.

I really want to take my son on a shoot where people obey the rules, are courteous and have a good clean time. You sure as hell can't find that on a public field. We tried it at Samworth a few weeks ago, I never even loaded my gun. Kept putting one shell in Jack's Mossberg and trying to teach him the fundamentals. It wasn't like he was a danger to the birds but there were dipshits trying to crowd up on us knowing it was his first time. Very unpleasant but he wants to go shoot birds again.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I've been shot before, and it hurts! My dad still has pellets in his face from when he got shot by a young boy (around 10 years old) some 20 years ago. I don't think that boy will ever forget that day, and it is not because of what my dad said or did.

We have always made a practice of yelling "LOW BIRD" whenever we saw one. Shooting back is not the answer, escorting them out of the field after a good butt chewing is.

Shooting a somebody intentionally could easily be seen as assault and battery, pointing and presenting a firearm and assault with a deadly weapon just to get started.
